Hi

My 6 month old DD has severe nappy rash at the moment to the point where the rashes are weeping and my DD cries every time she is wetting a nappy. The weeping rashes only appeared last night.

I just got back from the Doctor, he said that it is the acid in her wee that is making the rashes weep and making her cry as a result as her skin is literally burnt from the acidic nature of wee. He suggested using paw paw cream, having a lot of nappy free time and if it doesnt heal up within a few days to use cortisone cream.

He said it could be associated to the introduction of solids and teething.

Basically, i was wondering if there is anything else i can do for her?

I, in the last 3 weeks, have started using MCNs, could it have anything to do with that?

Anyone got any miracle cures? :wizard:

TIA!

We find bathing in bicarb soda is both soothing and healing for anything like that. DS was red raw and slightly bleeding one day and it was gone 2 days later. I also use it on myself to bathe nasty cuts or wounds...

Don't think the MCN would have too much effect it is more likely to be teething related at the age IMO

Ouch, poor bub! :crying: Would you consider using super absorbent disposables just for a couple of days to help clear the rash? My DS has never had nappy rash quite as bad as yours, but he did get quite red a couple of times when we were using semi-degradable disposable nappies a while ago. They weren't wicking the moisture away quick enough, and the acidic urine was eating at his skin. As soon as we changed to Woolworths Select nappies (they're really good, I recommend them to anyone) the rash cleared up and haven't come back, so we don't need to use nappy rash cream any more (but still have it there just in case).

I realise that you use MCN, and that it may go against your principles to use disposables, but it sounds like your bub is in real pain, so maybe it would be worth it for her sake. Apart from that I don't have any advice, as I'm sure you're keeping the area clean with giving her a bath every day.

Good luck, hope she gets better soon :)

My miracle cure was cornflour - straight out of the pantry.

DS had rash like that once - it was raw and bleeding. After being told about the magic of cornflour, I figured I had nothing to lose (br a bit of cornflour!) so I gave it a go, and it was amazing. Within 24hrs, you could hardly tell where the raw patch had been.

Give it a go - all you have to lose is a bit of cornflour! It's also a darn sight cheaper than any creams you will buy.

I don't know about the rest of it but the paw paw ointment is amazing!!

DD had nappy rash months ago. Hers was weeping as well. The ointment cleared the whole thing up within a week.

Genius stuff. No idea how it works but wish I'd thought of it.

Good luck.

DS only gets napy rash when a tooth is on it's way. The best remedy for him was lot's of nappy free time...bare bum, they love it :D as well as powder. i would literally just have full days where he was in no nappy...just put a towl under him to catch what he does. Even now that he is 20 months he still will have full days with no nappy and he will tell me when he needs one on to do a wee.

I second that! It's great stuff and can be used for other things besides nappy rash also. It's the best ever stuff.

Thanks for the tips guys

DD has spent the afternoon without a nappy. I have some paw paw cream so will be putting that on regularly and i hope it makes a difference.

I might also give some of the other suggestions a shot.

Paw paw cream is good but i find when DS has bad nappy rash the only thing that really helps it and helps it FAST!!!! (overnight its 100% better) is Daktozin cream. You just buy it from the chemist where the other nappy rash creams are..

Hope it clears up soon!

Hi

ive never tried paw paw cream, might try it when dd #2 comes along

With my daughter she had the same thing, actually acid wee whenever she was teething, and introduction of solids for a week or so.

Once when she was a new born nappy rash was so bad basic creams weren't working, my doctor said to use hydrozle can buy it from the chemist. It should only be used when the rash is horribly sore, but works fantastic! the pain is gone within 12 hours and i mean gone and the redness of the rash within 24, and you only need the tiniest dob with a barrier cream over the top, safe to use on babys nappy rash.

Good luck hope your little angel is feeling better soon

Another thing worth a try if all else fails is Lansolin. It's actually a cream used for sore nipples when breastfeeding but can be used for nappy rash as well. It's really thick and heavy so it creates a great barrier for their skin and far as I know doesn't have too many chemicals in it.
