I need to pick your brains :D

My DS is 6 months and breastfeeding is still going well

My goal was always to make it to 3 months and then 6 months and now I'm even thinking 12 months....He's on two solid meals a day (and loving it) and has been sleeping thru for almost two weeks (horray!!!)

SO I just wanted to know what do the feeds get like as bubs get older and become more established on solids?

Do feeds become shorter and less frequent?

How many feeds are you giving him?

My DD is 6 months and on 3 solid meals a day. She still wakes onces a night for a BF. Her total BF per day including her night feed is 4-5 depending on her naps and when she eats her solids. We really dont have a routine so its whever she is hungry. I tend to giver her a milk feed about 30 minutes before her solids meals.

I think with 3 solids meals 4-5 BF per day is fine. If he is not waking for a feed at night then 4 feeds during the day is good.

milk feed
breakfast
milk feed
lunch
milk feed
dinner
milk feed
bed

My DS is ten months old - he has three solids meals a day and some days up to 5 or 6 breastfeeds over 24 hours.

He doesn't sleep through the night so at least one, sometimes two of those feeds are overnight.

Even though he seems like he's still having alot of feeds, during the day most of his feeds are very short - less than 5 minutes mostly because now he's too busy to sit still longer than that

He has a much longer, more settled feed at bedtime - that's my favourite feed :) His night feeds are usually more settled as well.

HTH :)

Just a thought. How long is you DS taking to actually feed? ABA told me that a bub that age should be able to empty a breast in about 3.5-5 minutes.

I got an idea of a daily feeding routine from this link.

My DD is 19months now and still having quite a few short BF during the day. Usually 3-4 mins. This is her main source of fluids, apart from some water.
Around this age you may still be BFing before the solid meal but this will probably change in the next couple of months as he has solids 3 times a day and BF after that.
DD still has a BF some mornings when she is tired and doesn't want breaky.
Good to hear your DS is sleeping well, my DD still wakes 1-2 times for a snack (which she doesn't need).
Keep up the good work it only gets easier from here...the BF part that is:p

They might empty the breast that quickly - but comfort is probably another 15 mins:yes:

Thanks Ladies

He's having 4-6 feeds during the day....yesterday he was on the boob ever 2 hours or so but the day before he wasn't really that interested so I guess it all even's out

Good to know the feeds become shorter...I already think he's emptying them quicker now too.

Two weeks ago we ditched his dummy and I have noticed he will suck a bit longer sometimes which is probably for a bit of comfort

My new goal just could be 12 months :D

Yeah, if my DD wanted a comfort feed I would empty one side then allow her to go for as long as she wanted on the other. That way I knew she would get a full feed before getting tired.

Good on you for getting to six months:thumbsup:
I always thought 3 months, then it was 6 and now it's 12, it really does become quick and easy!

Thanks for that link Cheezelz, I am usually quite sceptical of routines but we're trying to sort one out in this household  good luck
