Negative then Positive - Advice Please!!

HI, Just wondering if anyone can clarify this for me - do negative pregnancy tests turn positive after the normal 'test' time? I have done three tests that have been negative during the three minute wait, but then a few minutes later read a postive. Is it just a reaction the test takes and is to be ignored and treated as negative? If anyone else has had this happen it would be great to know. Thanks.

Hi Kells, well if its very early it takes longer for the second line to appear, BUT they say ignore this. But i've kept all my old pregnancy tests and NEVER did i even see a faint second line when it was negative, and when I did see a slight second line up to 5 minutes later it was ALWAYS positive.

I'm sure others have had different experiences but thats just mine :)

Yeah, that can happen and it is usually called an evaporation line, but this is after about 20 minutes I think, Also an evap line is usually more of a shadow than a line - thats what I found anyway.
When I got a +ive I noticed that a line would appear in about 3 minutes if I held test to light but would darken a bit over the next few minutes making it more visible. Maybe this is what is happening for you. To be honest, It sounds like a positive result! When I did tests and I wasnt positive I didnt get any kind of line at all - not even after 12 hours!!!

A line's a line as they say. Given that ts only a few minutes after the testing time and that 3 have given the same result i'd be betting you are pregnant. I agree with Moonblossom, my neg's stayed neg's and the + ones are still visible 7 years later!:D

I can't really answer your question Kells but I do have a suggestion. On the test packet there should be a consumer help line, try them.

I had the Confirm brand and I didn't think I should be preg so soon (a voice in my head told me I was!) so after having a BFP I rang the help line to see what the chances of it being wrong were. The lady I spoke to was very helpful. She actually was almost like a counselor!

Thanks Moonblossum - it would be VERY early - I m/c 4 and a bit weeks ago and haven't seen AF and dont want to go back to dr for further invasion to see if all cleared out (I feel fine - although I know that doesnt matter!!!).
I guess I'll wait a few more days and see. I HATE waiting!!! I am the most impatient person on the earth and just want to know one way or the other!!!
I might even ring the preg test companies and see what they say. Thanks.

Sounds positive to me! When my tests showed negative I would go back and check them all day long too just incase I missed something (but they stayed Neg- ). That positive line won't come up unless it's testing something positive and the fact that it's happened more than once is a good sign. I suggest that you make an appointment to go and see you doctor just to confirm it..... GOOD LUCK

Apparently, the pregnancy hormone can stay in your body for weeks after a mc. I am not saying this is the case but it is possible that the test might be detecting that? I hope that it is a +ive result for you though Good Luck :)

By the sounds of it you could just be in the real early stage of pregnancy. I would probably test again within the next week or 2.

I have had the same thing before and it was negative.
You could be pregnant but I wouldn't say that that result was reliable.

I just rang the consumer line and they said that it is not a 'normal' thing to happen, and, without wanting to give me false hope, they said that if the levels were too low to come up straight away, as the test dries out it could then register. But of course, they said the usual "wait a few days and test again!!" AARRRGGGGHHHH!!!!
Oh well, I'll just keep hoping I dont see AF. (I am checking about 32 times a day!!)

Hi Kells,

I had the same as the others with my negatives (always left them next to the loo in my ensuite to check "just in case"). Anyway, with my second pg, I left the stick, but did re look at it the next day and there was the faintest line...so I tested the next day - definite second line. I never saw an evaporation line. The only thing I'd be worried about would be if you still had a level of HCG in your system from the miscarriage as Little pickle suggested.

Yes.. I think I might have to go back to the dr's to get the bloods and whatever re: the miscarriage, as that could be the explanation I think. Thank you to every one for your advice - I'm just going to put it out of my mind (HA! like that would work!) and test again. Will keep you posted.

First of all I'm sorry about your miscarriage.
re whether you would still have hgc levels after 4 1/2 weeks, I had a m/c and blood tests showed a negative after 1 and 1/2 weeks. I got a positve preg test 3 weeks later, and am now 28 weeks! Good luck, I hope it's a positive, my fingers are crossed! :)

I had the same problem, think my test was meant to be read within 5 minutes, so I walked away when it didn't come up within the first minute, then came back in 7 minutes and it was very very feint but it was there, I couldn't believe it!!! And here I was about to totally write off the thought I was preggas. Went to the doc too and it came up negative, did a blood test and there u go I was pregnant. A line is a line I say!!!!!

I did seven preganancy tests and all of them were negative and after twenty minutes were positive! I was preganant and the doctor told me that the only way the tests will go positive is if you have the HCG hormone in you. So she said regardless of how long it takes if that second line appears you are definitely pregnant!!

I have heard from one of the test kit companies that it is a evapouration issue and you should igonre it, but if you have missed your period, get a blodd test done, it does not give false results. Good luck.:)

That is so funny you say that Tatty, cause I showed my doctor the two feint tests I had and he said that the line could have appeared their later. What would he know!!! I felt like going back and shoving those sticks up his bum as he told me to go home and wait for AF as it was just late. GRRRRR......

I had a really faint +ve when af was one day late. A couple of days later I did another HPT with a different brand and it was -ve after the recommended 5 minutes. I was heartbroken but... when I showed DH the test about 3 minutes after that, there was a second line... and I am pregnant. So kells I think you may have a BFP there! Good luck! :)

My test had only one line for about 10 minutes. It took about 15-20 mins for my positive line to appear. My GP said it doesn't matter if the second line comes after hours!! If you get two lines any time you're pregnant! Congrats & Good luck to you!

Well I did another test this morning first thing, with Crystal Clear (which has always been my 'normal' brand - but I had been using supermarket ones) and got a BFP!!! Well, a very faint postive anyway!!!

Trying my best not to get too excited - want to confirm that it's not hormones left from m/c. Went to the dr today and had bloods so will know more next week! But she seemed pretty sure I was pg again!! YAY!!!

And it's funny, cos since I found out my pants feel tight, i feel really tired etc. Talk about mind over matter!

hi kellie i hope you are prego i had the same problem with my first i used crystal clear (which i think is the best by way) and i had no period for 7 weeks and no line bloods was -ive and at 10 weeks i showed up with +ive line and postive bloods then secound was 8 weeks very faint line on test but didnt show in bloods to 10 weeks they all thought i m/c but no i was preg now i am pregs with 3rd i missed my period i week later i test second line was their clear as day and bloods showed up as well so go figure but i knew i was pregs with 1,,2 so dont give up hope i thought i was going insane or crazy but good luck i hope every thing goes well ;)

Kells- hey darl i think im in the same boat as you!!! I could resist doing a hpt as af isnt due untill tuesday, however i did a test about half an hour ago and after about 5 minutes a very very very faint line turned up......... im not sure if its an evaporation line or a postive test ( i dont have the heart to write bf* just incase i jixn myself) I can see the line at arms lenght. I too am confused, i used confirm hpt and ive never used this brand before. Let me know how you go, in the mean time im going to bite my nails untill tomorrow morning when i do another test.

I think I have kept another pregnancy test company employee in a job this week. I have spent a fortune!

Hope it all goes well for you....I like 'crystal clear' the best. But the 'precise' brand I got at the supermarket is manufactured by the same people, and was about $4 cheaper! Go figure.

Myself on the other hand i did another one this morning and got another very very faint line??? Im not sure if its an postive as is more faint then the one last night, i thought i would of been darker??? The dr seems to think that is unlikely, but had a blood test thurs and having another one monday to see if the hcg levels are rising at a normal rate. So come Tuesday, at 9.45 when i see the doc, I will know more.

Also not sure how safe it is to be pg straight from m/c or if it even makes a difference.

It sounds to me like you must be pg and that it is only faint cos you are so early on. I would tell you to wait a few days and test again (the sensible, non obsessive thing to do :D ) but that is just ridiculous. Just be like me and buy each brand you can get your hands on and keep testing!!! Good luck.

Kells- i took your advice sweet and i brought the crystal clear hpt and........BFP!!! i got a + postive within 30 seconds!!! Thank you so much for your advice!!!! Im so nevous though as my last pg was a m/c also. However i doubt your hormones are from you m/c as i would of though they would of been out of your body way before now, best of luck for tuesday, what great news to have on valientines day!!! Good Morning and Happy Valentines Day..

I am ready to sue my body!! :D

After the dramas with the BFNs and then the BFPs I had, I tested last night and then this morning and big fat NEGATIVES!!!!!!! So I am just up and down like a yo yo at the moment. The one this morning had a really faint (and I mean hold it to light kind of faint) positive line after about 7 mins, but if I was pg by now it should be coming up straight away.

So I'm assuming it was just hormones leftover from m/c. Bugger!!:mad:

Anyway, off to the dr at 9.45 so will let you know how it goes. Still no AF.
