How restrictive was your diet?
What foods did you have to avoid?
Did you see a nutritionist?
I'm pretty sure dd has the above and I have been avoiding milk, cheese, cream practically everything that has milk in it, and I'm finding it quite restrictive on top of the things they tell you to avoid eating with a reflux bub.
I know it's something they grow out of eventually, but how long can it take? I'm commited to breastfeeding and I'm in for the long haul, I just want to know what I'm up for.
Any help would be appreciated
Thanks
Anita

When DS was first born I thought maybe he had that, but I didn't give up dairy and he got better anyway. I'm glad I didn't because I love my milk and cheese! The only things I have limited are chocolate and caffeine, because I do notice a difference in DS when I eat/drink anything with those things in them. He's a lot more revved up if I do and sleeps less (and harder to settle at night), and it's just not worth it for me.
I was just typing out the same question when I found yours!
My DD has had reflux since she was 8 weeks and she is now 20 weeks and currently taking zoton.
I am also breastfeeding and was put on an elimination diet avoiding dairy, chocolate, onions, caffiene, garlic, capsicum,nu ts and chilli.I was very strick for the first 10 weeks and in the last two had relaxed a bit and my poor little girl has been pooing between and after every feed and not gaining any weight.
After seeing her pead today he said the options were to wean which I am not at all ready to do or eat none of the suspect foods.
I want to know what happens when we start solids will she be able to eat dairy?
It is hard going trying to find suitable items to eat but I think it is the beginning of the sacrifices we make for our little ones.AS for how long we got another script so for me at least another 3 months....

 Amber,
thanks for posting. I'm just so lost on this issue and hopefully will get more of an idea on what I'm up for when I see her paed tomorrow. My hubby along with my mil would luv to see nothing more than for me to wean her onto formula - albeit for 2 different reasons  , but I'm enjoying this time with her and would hate for this to happen.
My dd is on 10mg of losec daily and to be quite honest have not found that much of a difference. Hopefully I can get this reassesed tomorrow to find something that works :fingerscrossed:
As for your dd being able to eat dairy once on solids - I'm pretty sure they have to avoid it for the same reasons you avoid while breastfeeding. I'm sure your paed will be able to supply a definate answer.
Thanks
Anita

I went to an allergy specialist and saw a dietician once there
My son had both reflux and Protein milk allergy
His still got it and is now three so yeah he doesnt have any dairy
I was on the elimination diet whilst bfing but found it very hard so only lasted 3mths before weaning ds onto a prescription formula...he was diagnosed at 7mths so he was bf till almost 11mths
The paed. will be able to help more im sure if not go get an allergy specialist opinon:) :fingerscrossed:

Well went to the paed today and he reckons that dd doesn't have a milk protein intolerance even though i explained to him the symptoms she gets when i do have any milk products. He think its just reflux related. So, I don't know
I'm pretty sure she does - even if it's just minor - but he wasn't willing to explore it further. Even though he did say that if I wanted to put her on formula to put her on a Lactose Intolerant formula - I'm very confused. I suppose I will just have to test it out. Big glass of milk first thing tomorrow morning I think.
Thanks Amber - I really don't want to wean either and my paed was pretty adamant that I keep breastfeeding as he reckons it is the best thing for bubs. The good thing was is that dh came with me today - so he now knows how important it is for me to keep breastfeeding.
nemosmum - if things keep persisting I will definately be seeking an allergy specialists opinion. I can imagine how restrictive your diet was - thats what I'm worried about - i luv my food to much, lol
mikenzeesmum - thanks for the list - will definately keep it just incase dd does have intolerance - I'm sure it will come in handy.
Sorry for the long rant ladies :o

Chicco, if you think that she has MPA then restrict your diet and forget the paed's advice. I had some really shoddy advice re my twins while I was breastfeeding (including being told by a paed that maternal consumption of milk protein doesn't affect the child (hello??????!!!) Forget that both children would come out in hives if I ate any dairy...). After seeing a dietician I followed a very restrictive diet eventually weaning them onto Neocate at 9 months as I was hospitalised with pneumonia. At around 18 months we saw a great paediatric allergist who confirmed life threatening MPA. They were so allergic to milk protein that they would go into anaphylaxis if they had skin contact, let alone injested the stuff and I'm sure that the allergy got so extreme because I didn't follow my gut and do the exclusion diet earlier (instead of taking the medical advice).
They are 2.5 years old now and just beginning to tolerate very small amounts of dairy, but it has been a long and scary road with quite a few life threatening exposures, so take it really really really seriously! If you manage it well and keep the exposures to a minimum most babies will overcome it pretty quickly and 80% completely recover by 5 years of age.
Good luck!
Oh that wasn't the outcome you were looking for.You know your bub best if you feel it works to avoid it I would be doing that.Is bubs staying on reflux medication?
All the different advice is so confusing.
Duchessa-wow that is really scary, poor little possums.

nemosmum - i just feel so lost and like a first time mum on this issue, especially when the paed is brushing my concerns aside. Even dh said - "Well he deals with kids everyday, I think he knows what he's talking about!" - that really s**t me.
duschessa - thats just plain scary! I'm glad it got recognised eventually, but it just shows how shonky some so called medical experts actually are:thumbsdown: . I have had a bowl of cereal this morning just to see if bubs gets any reaction, hopefully she doesnt:fingerscrossed: , and it's all reflux related, but will keep you posted.
amber7 - definately not the outcome I wanted - he just re told me everything he said at her 6 week check up - which was really anoying. Other than that he upped her dose of losec to 10mg a day to 15 mg a day - so we'll see how we go on this.
As for the inotelerance these are the symptoms I find dd gets;
- mustardy, mucousy, explosive poos with white bits in it
- increased vomiting
- increased irritability
- increased nasal congestion - to the point where she finds it hard to breathe out her nose.
She has no serious side effects like hives or wheezing etc, but does this sound about right for a milk protein intolerance? God, I just feel so bloody useless :gloomy:
Thanks for your replies guys its a big help

oh you poor mummy ,**hugs "** it is so hard to define what exactly your child is reacting to .. i have found to always take everyone suggestions and if you feel it is warranted .. try it - ie .. eliminate the dairy from you diet see how it goes ..if it works .. keep it out .. ?? i mean you loose the dairy in your diet but you might get a happier baby???
my bubs has true confirmed milk allergies and some of those symptoms fit with her ?? ( once i ate yoghurt when breastfeeding her and she was the worst i have seen her with regards to vomiting - but most of the time she hardly ever vomited ?? ).. we struggled for almost 6 months to breast feed her .. do what you can .. and dont feel guilty for what you have done / doing !! if you need to bottle feed her - it is just trial and error ? all you can do is try ..
she is soley on neocate now and she is still having issues . but that is another story
Great list amy (mikenzees mum !! ) too !! that is more comprehensive than any of my lists rofl

I've got a MPA, Soy and Egg toddler here (he's 19 months now). It was ages until we got him diagnosed, but once we did, he has become a much happier boy. For a long time he was cranky, miserable and had lost a lot of his spark.
I managed to breastfeed him for 12 months, but we weaned him onto Pepti Jnr around his firt birthday. I went Dairy free (then later soy free) for the latter half of my breastfeeding time. It can be done, and if you do it well, it can be healthy for you too. But it is best to talk it through with a professional.
I would really encourage you to see a Nutritionist for yourself and your baby. It just helps refine things. I already had an idea about what I had to do with an Elimination diet for myself, but talking to a professional about it made it seem less daunting and you could sort out easy alternatives and meal plans for you and your baby etc.
Hugs to you and hope that whatever you have decided to do works out. :hugs:

Always follow your gut....that has been my experience. My DD was finally diagnosed with milk protein allergies at 9 months after many doctors, paediatricians, 7 day tresilliane stay had dismissed anything wrong. She was apparently just an 'unhappy baby' as many had told me. I knew this wasn't right so kept going. Unfortunately that did mean some yucky tests and treatments (such as losec that did nothing). In the end she had to go on to a prescription formula called Neocate and have a very restrictive diet. From that moment on I have never had any trouble with her! I weaned her off the neocate at about 3 yrs and slowly introduced other foods and now she is now 5yo and has no allergies to milk protein and eats whatever she likes! I am glad i didn't give up but it took way too long for anyone to listen.

I stopped all milk a few days ago. I also stopped bub on Zantac. I am so glad I did. I didn't believe she needed the Zantac and was always so sceptical of giving her any drugs. She is no different than when she WAS on Zantac, and I think the no milk and no chocolate thing is working.
She does have a stuffy nose, though... So I am hoping it is just a cold and not because of her reflux :(
