ideas needed 2 birthdays in one party

hi, my dsd will be 9 soon and the day after ds will be 1 so we planned to have a combined party. have got the 1st bday invites and dsd will have her own invites (to the same people) need some ideas to keep things simple and cheap as possible. thinking about making the cakes but i need to make them gluten free as ds may have gluten allergy as i do. i know what cake mix i am going to use but am stuck for ideas on the designs of the cakes. any ideas for the day would be really helpfull

My kids are the same age. DD turned 9 and DS turned 1 on march 6 (same birthday).

We had a sausage sizzle/pool party. Snags are cheap, no frills chips, soft drink and lollies (kids don't know the difference), lots of colourful balloons, streamers and table decorations. Home made cakes. Just a good old fashioned kids party. They had a ball.
