Hi LittleMissymoo, thats so nice of you to ask!!
Haven't visited this site all week, I was feeling positive after all the support I got from here, but that is quickly diminishing again:( .....
There has been no change, worse really... He is waking often, sometimes every 40 minutes, and his first tooth cut a few days ago..... I'm feeling quite anxious. Our trip o/s is coming up in just under 4 weeks, I'll be a wreck if he is like this... and on top of that, after the 6 week stay o/s, I have to be back at work 4 weeks later!!!! So I have no idea how I'm going to be able to function
I'm still not keen to go to a sleep centre, and I would like just to be able to ride it out. But I need that light at the end of the tunnel!!!!!
l'll post this as a separate thread too, but I was wondering if instead of picking him up each time, if I pat him on his side in his bed while he cries - is this considered controlled crying?? I have only tried this very briefly as he resists strongly and cries loudly, so I just pick him up.
Might go to Dr Sears again, that was a good site and talks about their sleep cycles, it sounds like he just always wakes at the end of his sleep cycle, so I need to know how to get him through that.
How are you going?

There you are!
Sorry to hear things are the same but at least you are trying and you never know, the next method you try may be the one that works.
I think if DS is protesting with the patting I would take that as a hint to stop as it isn't soothing him. Take a look on the Dr sears web site at the infant sleeping swing (its a pop up box on the right hand side of the screen). Its guarenteed to sooth fussy sleepers. Other than that, does he have a dummy and is he swaddled tightly? I used to put my worn jumper over DD's chest before I wrapped her so she could smell me and I think it really helped. I stroked DD's hair when she wokr after one 45 min sleep cycle and it soothed her back to sleep.
At least you're going on a holiday soon you lucky thing
Hunni2,
My DS did the same thing for the better part of 10 months. Sometimes we'd get 2 cycles of sleep out of him, but more often than not just the 1. The only thing that got us through was co-sleeping.
But then I discovered an amazing chiropractor who specialises in children and babies. She found a few points in his neck, shoulder and back that were out, a lot of it due to the labour and birth being a long, dry one (ie. had lost most of my waters).
Anyway, these problems were causing an overproduction of adrenaline in his little body, which made it difficult for him to sleep past one cycle. He'd get into his light sleep stage and the extra adrenaline and cortisol in his body would cause him to wake crying, as he couldn't resettle.
It was like a baby being on speed. My poor little boy, I felt so glad I didn't cave into pressure from others to let him cry it out etc. It would have just created more trauma.
Sorry for the long post, but I thought it might pay to get your DS checked out. The chiro told us it's more common than people realise, and many people just put it down to bubs being a "bad sleeper" and needing to be "trained".
You need to find someone who really knows what they're doing. Oh, and look for someone who practices a technique called Network Spinal Analysis. This is what our chiro does and it's amazing. The day after DS' first treatent he had a 3hr nap, and then went on to sleep in 3hrly cycles the next night.
Oh, and one question. If you're still breastfeeding, or did for a while, did your DS ever ridiculously favour one side? My DS had a big issue, especially around the 6-7 month mark, only wanting the left side, and I had to really push the right boob sometimes. But it was always his favourite side.
Apparently this can be an indication of a neck or shoulder problem. The reason DS favoured the left side was because it was more comfrotable for him when I held him, due to his right shoulder being out of place and really clicky. This was the point that was causing the adrenaline stimulation and hence the sleep problems.

Hi Littlemissymoo, I checked out Dr sears again, has some good stuff there huh. I read all about high need babies - seems we have one!! We have a hammock bed like that one, but didn't work for us, we use it as a swing type play thing now. He has a dummy (thank G for dummies), and I'll try the the jumper idea. I haven't swaddled him for ages, he seems to like to be loosly wrapped, but maybe I'll try again though.
Yeah, looking forward to the trip really - it will still be a great experience even if I am delirious and fuzzy brained!!

Well ellissas... you'll never believe it, but I have been feeding DS from the left breast only since he was about 4 mths... he favoured the left and then eventually I couldn't get him to feed off the right at all. I expressed etc and gave up the struggle as he was content with the one only (needless to say that I now have one B cup and one E cup!!!! ). We actually wondered about his neck/back so we did take him to a chiro for 3 visits, but didn't get any results. So, sounds like it would be worth trying someone else. Thanks heaps, I'll look for the Network Spinal Analysis technique.
Sounds exactly like my DS. Freakishly similar.
Definitely need to find the right person. Many people have tried chiro and not seen much in the way of results. The one we see has so many referrals, as most people notice a change within 24 hrs.
I first noticed that DS had a clicky shoulder at about 2 months of age. I asked a GP about it, who dismissed it and said, babies can just be like that.
Wish I'd followed my gut instinct then!
She had one little girl who was 2 and had never had a bowel movement without medical assistance. 48hrs after her first NSA treatment, she did a massive poo, unassisted, that overflowed the nappy andended up all over the cot! It's an amazing technique if you get the right practitioner. Problem is that there aren't a lot that practice it. You might need to contact a chiro association and get a referral?

Good idea, I will try that. Thanks!
