I have trouble with tablets, would even gag on the pill. I have been taking elevit now for 8 months, my ob recommeded them. They can be broken in half to make them easier to swallow. I have been taking them just before I go to bed with a glass of milk and I have had no sick feeling from them. I know they are expensive but bubs is worth it.

They are about capsule size. I found taking them at night didn't make me feel sick. They are a little cheaper at chemist warehouse (by about $10-$15) but they are worth it.

My gp told me not to take them and even my obs backed him up and they gave me a table of all the pregnancy tablets available and I was surprised at how low the supplements are. They all said to take iron and the folic acid seperately as they would not give the right amount.

*****BESTEST ADVICE EVER FOR SWALLOWING!!!!!*****

I too used to have an issue swallowing tablets & somewhere i heard this& to this day DH thinks i am a bit odd but in all honesty it works....
Before you put the pill in your mouth tilt your head back (look right up at the celing),& then down (down to the floor) do this 3 times & then put the pill in your mouth & have a swig of water & Volare pill swallowed!!!!!!
It apparently opens up your throat so there is a reason behind it not just a party trick:D .
BTW I take Elevit & did with DD they are the best viatimins cause you only need to take one tablet ,i think the others you need to take two (may be different now )
best of luck , try it.

about $50ish for 100 tabs depending on where you live. I lived in a suburb where they were 59.95, now live in one where they can be as cheap as 49.95

I took Elevit with both my last pregnancy and my current one. They are around $50-$60 for 100 tablets and they are larger than a capsule. I find it best to take them at night before bed and they are meant to be one of the best pregnancy multivitamins around - so I didn't have to take any iron, folate or anything else. Oh!I lie, I did have some extra magnesium at times to help with leg cramps.

my ob reccommends them as well but when i looked at the chemist and compared them with others, they had a lower dose on lots of things and didn't even have others. i spoke to the chemist women and did some research and now take the blackmores breast feeding and pregnancy ones as they have the fish oil in that you need. what i am saying is do your research as doctors get kickbacks for reccommending things!!!

My OB also said that it was fine to take plain Folic Acid tablets (to prevent neural tube defects) for the first few months (very tiny & Cheap too). He asked how my diet was overall and I said pretty good, so he said he would not reccomend taking anything extra. I had a blood test and my Iron was apparently "quite good for a pregnant lady" so I never have had to take iron tablets even.

Try to eat a balanced diet  and follow your Dr's advice, but I don't think you need to worry about buying into multivitamin/brand hype. The only difference with pregnancy specific supplements vs. normal multivitamins is usually more folic acid, and iron and less vitamin A (to prevent toxicity to baby). But for the cost, it's a bit insane when you can just supplement exactly what you need for way less $$$.

yes he did mention it was to prevent neural tube defects in the baby....weird thing is when i was preg with my son i never took any suplement...a liquid iron suplement towards the end but thats it...so how important would u all say taking these vitamins is? the cost is expensive sounding but then again if they are nessasary i will definatley be getting them just wondering how you feel about them in terms of how important?

I take them too LOL! Also take them before bed to reduce any chances of them making me queasy. They haven't made me sick at all, and I don't find them uncomfortably big - they are kind of like a 'chubby panadol' in size. My OB also suggested to still keep taking Fefol, but only 2-3 a week now rather than every day.

Well, you say you never took any supplement with your DS, so obviously, for you, the supplements would be almost pointless it seems. As long as your diet is basically the same now and your DR is happy with that. If I were you I wouldn't waste my $ on Elevitt.

I took Elevit for 2 months before falling and then for the first 3 months, as it's supposed to be "clinically proven" to prevent Neural Defects. Then I switched over to Blackmores as they are lot cheaper especially if you buy the big jar.

If your diet is good and you are only worried about Neural Defects, I would just take Folate tablets for the first 3 months, then don't take anything.

my obsty doesn't recommend elevit if you have a good healthy diet, which i do. she said elevit would be good for people who live on junk food and aren't getting the necessary nutrients from their diet.

Hi, I started taking elevit after advice from my GP but I found they made me so so constipated and then I was worried about getting haemorroids.. Sorry if TMI.. I have since swapped to the Blackmores Pregnancy and Breastfeeding and as well as having the omega 3 oils hat are really important, I have been regular ever since! Much better than elevit!

I took Elevit as soon as i found out i was prg. I cant remember who recommended them to me.... it wasnt my gp or ob... my gyny before we even tried??? Oh well.

I took them all pregnancy and afterwards and my baby was 7 pounds at 35 weeks as she was premmy. She never went to special care, never had a health issue and was with me thw whole time. I met another person who had a 35 weeker and her baby was in NICU for the 7 weeks, 3 pounds and was pretty sick. I just wonder if the elevit helped my baby along???
My cousin is tiny... like a size 6 is big on her (hate her, i know) and she had a 9 pounds, healthy baby girl and yes, she took the elevits too.

I didnt have any problems at all with them.

:babydust2: hi elevit has heaps more iron and 800 units of folic acid compared to 200 in blackmores and even if you take 2 only 4oo so elevit heaps stronger:wave:

well it seems like a mixed response...some obviously liked them and others didnt...i dont have a prob trying them but thing is if i do buy them and there not working out for me then ive just wasted $50 which to us is alot of money....im thinking of just getting some folate tablets maybe something with iron in it...ill have to see how my blood tests went i guess too....

I take Elevit as well - did with my DS and do for this pregnancy. I find them great, (DS was a healthy 9pd 7 born -but I think that had more to do with a family history of big babies! :)).
The good thng about it is you do only have to take one a day.

Go with what you feel comfortable with though - every pregnancy multi-vitamin will have different reactions for different people of course so you never know which one will be best for you.

If you do take Elevit though, your, ahem, bowel movements, may be a little black to begin with as your body adjusts to the iron content, (or something like that) - but this is all explained in the little pamphlet that comes with the tablets.
