View Full Version : Op shop shopping
Anyone else love browsing op shops?
With 4 kids I find it such an affordable way to clothe them in good quality things, as well as stocking up on hats, play clothes etc. I also find some really really nice stuff for myself, they often have brand new stuff as well that might be factory seconds, or end of stock stuff that has been donated.
Today I did the rounds and in one of them they had containers of brand new Peter Alexander pjs, all different sorts, 10 items for $1!!!
I also picked up a heap of golden books and babysitter club books for the kids (again 10 for $1), a pair of brand new Pumpkin patch shorts for dsd (for $1), 3 lovely tops for dd and a hat and pair of shoes (all kids world, ladybird and oshkosh, and all in A+ condition) a gorgeous cot sheet set for $7, 2 brand new tops for me, and 2 great pairs of pants, all about $5 each, but my most exciting find of the day was an old fisher price cash register identical to the one i used to own, in immaculate condition WITH all its coins, for $6!!!
Ahhh, I love op shops:D
I love op-shops too Coops. Nothing more exciting than finding a bargain!! Jumble sales, markets, garage sales, trash 'n' treasure.... you name it and I'm there!!
I've found heaps of things over the years....
I just love the fact that "One mans trash is another mans treasure".
I dont have any problem with Op shopping.
Lx
well you're lucky..here in Sydney they are full of trash!! I miss good op shops!
*mothballs* :D
Try the Kirribilli markets in Sydney - fantastic. 4th Saturday of every month, 7:00am - 3:00pm. At Bradfield Park, Milsons Point Cnr Alfred & Burton St, (near Milsons Point Station). :)
Now markets I love :D
it's the people I hate..I think I need to become famous so I can shop alone :D
I love op shops, markets and all that stuff :) I just can't seem to find any decent ones round here...brisbane southside...any ideas anyone?

Or way up my way is The Caboolture market every Sunday, starts about 6ish .
Long drive either way probably but well worth the effort IMO
Thanks Shelly68 :) I went to Carrara a few months ago and it was mostly new stuff...and not very good quality either. :( Haven't tried caboolture yet...might have to go there next time, it is a bit of a drive from where i live :)

I hadn't hit the op shops in ages before today!
I needed some bathers for the little one to start swimming lessons. All the stores have got rid of their bathers, so got some second hand for $3! I was thrilled! The last time I saw some in the shops, they were $30.
I will definitely be getting back into the op shopping!
hey girls, i love the markets and garage sales too :)
there is nothing like sifting through the crappy granny dresses and stuff at an op shop or markets and coming across that one piece in the midst that was made for you:D i think you have to be prepared for the fact that some days there will be nothing you like, and to not buy something that you dont love just because it is cheap.
I find the bigger op shops are usually the best for bargains, they often get good new stuff from places and have more good quality toys and groovy knick knacks, having said that i usually find one or two things everytime im in a little one too. :)
I used to work across the road from a big Lifeline shop and I swear, I was the best dressed girl in town.
Hey Erin ....
I will have to pop up and go op shopping with you one day soon! I'm sure that I will want some new things for my new house and Bella's wardrobe is looking pretty bare!
Will have to set up a date some time in the next month-ish ...
I also love finding cool dressing up clothes for the kids.
Love it!!
Where i use to live in sydney's eastern suburbs, my local op shop was full of brand name clothing. I used to get Jenna heaps of gorgeous clothes.
Just the other day i went into one and found two hats for her (swimming costume material) for the beach. I went to all the shops last week and they had taken them off the shelves for winter stock, so i was pretty chuffed to find them and they only cost me a $1 each.

I lurve my local op shop. There is nothing over $4.00. Children's clothing is all between 50 cents and a dollar. And lucky for us this particular op shop is full of newish, good quality brands. I have bought 4 prams from there-two were $5 and two were $8. One being an emmaljunga which I've kept because it is the smoothest pram I have ever pushed. The others are for reselling on ebay. I got a portacot for $6-nothing wrong with it. We have a few others in the area but I find the op shops run through groups like Salvo's and MS society are expensive. Considering they make 100% profit I think they ask too much for used goods.
Post birth I bought $9.00 worth of clothing to see me through until my old clothes fit again. 4 tops, pants, tracksuit pants, a shirt, 2 singlet tops and a skirt.

I'm with you ladies! I'm an op shopoholic!! I have collected 50's/60's clothes, furniture & bric a brac etc for about 10 years now . I find lots of funky kids stuff too...my latest score was some Mini Minor , and esprit jumpsuits with matching hats... very cute. Must admit that since Vintage & Boho stuff has become popular it's harder to find and more expensive , but living out in the country not as many poeple are into it which is good! Wish we has good markets round here tho.... i love going to Paddington, Glebe & Bondi markets in Syd when i can !
I've been shopping for clothes at op shops for a few months now. My reason is I used to by Australian made clothes and in particular I tried to buy clothes that I knew weren't made in sweat shops or with slave labour. It's very hard to buy ethically made clothing so now I mostly buy second hand.
Like someone else said, I only buy stuff I really like - it's not a bargain if you don't wear it when you get home. And I funnily enough get more nice comments about how I dress now that I wear second hand stuff - I can now buy things like silk blouses etc that I simply couldn't afford to buy at the shops.
And the really great thing is that I know the money I spend goes to a good cause:yelclap:
Op shops have always been a fave haunt of mine, for practically 20 years now, lol!!
or should that be
.....don't really have the time or strength to go now what with 2 under 2!
But it's great to recycle --to give to them and also get a bargain and help the cause.

I love op shops, markets and all that stuff :) I just can't seem to find any decent ones round here...brisbane southside...any ideas anyone?
i think there are some markets in beenleigh? not sure of the details. a short travel will bring you to the ones at the sleemans centre - off old cleveland road. i think they are open sundays 6am - 1pm??? not sure exactly.
but, i think there is a guide to markets, etc that you can buy at newsagencies.
i USED to go op shopping heaps. now i OCCASIONALLY look - the prices have gotten WAY too expensive for me! & i often see things for MORE than their original price! e.g. supre clothes that i've seen for $5 at supre are usually about $7+ at lifeline (i think lifeline is one of the most expensive opshops now - they have ppl working with the prices who KNOW all the brands, or think they do with some! )
i live near wynnum (brisbane) & there are HEAPS of op shops along one of the main roads there :D but as i said, i can't afford anything there (i can usually get my clothes cheaper discounted at target, kmart, etc!)
