My DS 20months has over the past few days has started waking and screaming, thrashing about etc, he won't let me console him or pick him up. I keep trying to keep him close to me when this is occuring to stop him hurting himself as he thrashes wildly, it lasts about 2-10mins.

We have just come back from holiday where we stayed at various places with DS sleeping in bed with me. He is now back in his own toddler bed but has been waking at odd intervals and I have taken him in with me. The night terrors have been occuring in his bed and mine. Prior to all this he was sleeping through the night.

I guess my question is what do you do, console them as much as you can, or sit back let them thrash about. No sleep book seems to have any advice. Will he stop this it is quite scary and distruptive.

My son has these also.
They are pretty scary but he has had them now for about 3 years. I have been to the doctor and they all say its nothing to worry about. He NEVER remembers them.
But I understand as it is so scary to watch your child be so upset.

We get our son out of bed, I don't know if there is a recommendation, this just works for us.
We speak calmly.

We usually bring the dog in and he pats him and then wakes up and wants to go back to bed.

There is a website but it has a forum maybe google Night terrors?

I hope it gets better for you soon.

Hi Deb - I can understand your worries - I have had night terrors for years and first had them at about 5 years - they are pretty horrible. There are many sites on the net (http://www.sleepdisordersguide.com/night-terrors.html) but perhaps a sleep study may be a good idea if they are very bad....
