I'm going to be using prefolds with a cover when I have my bubba.
Today I was putting a BP on my 18 month old and thought "wow these are exactly like prefolds except the insert stays still due to the clips!"
I then started wondering about having a whole stash of BPs instead of prefolds. Could you do it? I know it would be HEAPS more expensive but would they work? The BPs have no gussets but from looking at the current wrap thread lots of covers don't.
So what do you think.
If you were rich and were going to go prefolds anyway would you do BPs?

I used prefolds in BP covers over a 3 day period when we went to kakadu.
I think that newborn ppos would get all over your minkee and also the PUL is right side out on BPs and the poo might stain them.

I agree about the staining
There are so many great nappies out there, if you like the Berry Plush you'd love a lot of other nappies. Maybe try a few different types before you get too many of one type. The other down side to BP is they are sized, and on the small side, I'm finding my 2 year doesn't fit into the larges very well anymore.
for example, in the morning when I know the boys are going to have a morning poo and or a huge wee, I'll put them in a pocket nappy that has extra boosting. So it's easy to rinse, and the extra boosting takes care of the wee factor.
then after that I'll use my BPs and my other snap in type nappies because the poo is more annoying to rinse because it gets under and in the inserts, and it's hard to get off the PUL.
I use bamboo fitteds with wool covers at night because they are more absorbent, and the wool holds everything in.
so I guess what I'm saying is there are different nappies for different occasions, and my BPs look and feel nice, and work pretty well, but they aren't my favourite nappies. And if I had enough money to spend $36 per nappy for my stash, I wouldn't get all BPs

So do the normal covers like motherease etc get stained when using the lay-in prefold method?

possibly, I guess it depends if they have a lining on the inside or not :detective:
Fleece ones would probably rinse easier
I've used prefolds (actually I haven't, I've used terrys folded into a pad) inside a Bummis cover and haven't had any problems with leakage or staining....
you could use your prefolds as inserts for pocket nappies too..
maybe just get a few of each. Some BP, some pocket nappies, some cheaper covers..
