View Full Version : Ovulation Testing - Which Method is Best?
What is the best of the following options:
Maybe Baby
Fertility Focus
In Stream OPK
I've been trying charting but my temps are all over the place so I'm looking for another alternative and they all come at a price. So any personal experiences would be great advice to help me make the better purchase.
Thank you!

Hello! I have found OPK's (Ovulation Predictor Kits - the in-stream ones) to be the most effective so far. I bought a generic brand maybe baby and haven't seen a single fern! I am too lazy to chart temps (though probably should make more of an effort). Personally, I think that OPK's are much better for the 'woman on the run'! You can get them at www.fertilitynaturopath.com (http://www.fertilitynaturopath.com/Shopping/default.asp) in bulk for a decent price.

Hi. All of the urine tests for ovulation are very accurate, but $$$, especially if your cycle is irregular. Family Planning Victoria recommend a combination of the Temp Method and the Mucus Method as a way of avoiding/becoming pregnant.
Temp Method - immediatley on waking, before getting out of bed, before eating, drinking, smoking, orally/vaginally(maintain the same site), best to use a beeping digital thermometer. Temp can be raised by illness, alcohol, sleeping in, too little sleep and electric balnkets.
Mucus Method - check your vaginal mucus immediatley on waking. Approaching ovulation rising oestrogen levels produce a feeling of wetness at the vagina, with the mucus becoming clear, more watery and elastic. Often described as an egg-white texture. All going well this mucus change should coincide with a rise in body temp (0.2-0.5 degrees).
If your cycles are regular and you are vigilant this could work for you. Contact the Family Planning association in your state for more info - they can give you charts to work from.
Good luck

I've been using the OPK's from Woolworths, the brand is Fortel and its $20 for five strips. Not cheap but they are soooo easy to use. They come with a collection cup and little sucker thing to get from the cup to the strip.
Whatever you do, forget the chemist!!! I've seen the most amazingly dear prices in every one I have visited.
I did buy some cheaper ones from ebay but they are the tiniest strip imaginable and only half of them work because its so hard to only pee on a little section of it.

I've been using the Donna Fertility Tester (salvia ferning thingy)
It worked really well for me, it says to wait 5 -15 minutes before looking at it to allow time for the salt crytals to form. The first few times I didn't think it was working but then once I forgot about it for about 1 hour and then when checking there was full on ferning!!! Since then I leave it at least an hour and its been working great, it predicted ovulation right on line with my temps on CM chating.
Ally - have you tried leaving your sample for longer? And I found it worked better if there are no bubbles and a decent layer of saliva as well.
Oh and I also get strong pains (kinda like AF cramps but more sharp and on one side) the day before and of ovulation
xx Denise
