View Full Version : Ins and outs of cloth wipes
Ok... I only not long just found out you can get cloth wipes.... I hate the cost of diposable ones.... so these sound like a good investment..
What is the deal with them??... Like how do you use them and clean them and stuff??...
Can I buy stuff from a shop and make my own?? and if so what sort of fabric is best??...
And how many constitutes enough for a stash to last three days??....
TIA girls...

I just wet them under the tap when I want to use them. For most of my wipes I bought some flannel from spotlight and overlocked it into squares.
For cleaning well I just use the 'little squirt' that I use to clean the nappies to wash off the poo. If you don't have that though wipe poo off with nappy first then use the wipe and don't worry about washing excess poo off the wipe. The just wash in your machine.
I just use cheap washers from Big W. The thin ones are better, easier to get a grip. Most of the poo still ends up in the nappy, so I just throw the washer in the machine as it is.
I would also recommend cheap face washers.
I probably use about 7-8/day. I have also just cut up some old terry nappies to use and an old towel would prob work fine. I have a couple of fleece ones too which are good if there's just wee (bit softer on the bot!).
I use a spray bottle filled with water to wet them before I use them.
For cleaning just chuck them in your nappy bucket and wash with the nappies. I do sometimes soak really pooey ones but mostly it's not really necessary.
They are such a great money saver and easy peesy to use.
so I don't need to scrub the poo out of them like you do the nappies???....
I don't have a little squirt yet... am saving for that!!! can't wait to get it!!! it will be so much easier!!...

Yes, life will get much easier once you get that little squirt
I have the 'Little Wishes' (Safeway brand) wipes and they are great. I got about 3 or 4 packs- I think I have 15 or 20 wipes all up.
I shove them in an empty Huggies wipes tub and pour water from the kettle over them, just enough to dampen them. Water from the kettle is a must if you want them pre-dampened, the wipes then stay fresh for a few days.
If it's pooey, well it just gets a spray with the Little Squirt when the nappy is sprayed. I then chuck it in the nappy bucket with the nappies, no soaking or anything like that, just drypailed with the nappies.
Easy!

I got some great ones from Baby Soft Landings that have flannel print one side & sherpa the other. The sherpa is really good for times when you need 'grabability' - even with the biggest poop i find that i don't need any more than 2 wipes to clean dd up completely. If you can sew you could easily make your own.
I dampen my wipes with cooled chamomile tea that i keep in an old soap pump container, which gets refilled every few days.
And they get dry pailed with the nappies.
Easy peasy :-)
i use chux cos i like to wipe a hundred times.. well maybe about 8 for a wee nappy, really "bathe" the whole area with a wet chux, then dry with a flannel.
i keep a little bowl that i pour baby bath solution into for each nappy change, dunking chux in as i go.
i use tissues for the first few big poo wipes though..
I use the yellow Vileda kitchen wipes cut into 4 and a pop top bottle filled with water so I can wet them as needed. The wipes are great not too thick and nice and soft. They have lasted 12 mths+ too:thumbsup: .
I use IKEA face washers, they're not too thick and a good big size and come in packs of 10 for about $7 from memory. I have heaps of them and use them not just for bum wipes but also always carry a few in my bag for wiping faces and sticky fingers and vomit and food and whatever!
The little squirt makes it so easy to clean the poo off them right away, I've had my lot for 10 months and still going strong no stains or anything.
I just have some cheap bi-lo brand kitchen cloths, ($1.50 for a 5 pack!) and i cut them in 4, so i have 20 and they are still huge... i only need 1-2 even for a messy poo!
I have a squirty bottle and put a bit of baby wash in it (just a tiny bit) and fill it with water, spray it on the wipe, or on his bum if its a hot day - he loves it!
I wrap up the wipes in the cloth nappy and wash them all out together :) (under the hose outside lol i dont have a little squirt yet!)
