View Full Version : 13 month old with speech problem
My son is now 13 months and im worried about he speech. He babbles all the time but will not say mum or muma, no m words at all actually. All he can really say is dad or daddy and he calls me dad, also nan and baba. He very rarely points at things or tell me what he wants.Im worried that there is something wrong with him. He wont play with his toys anymore he just wants to be around me and the baby or sit at the back door and watch the dogs.
REading is also a problem when im half way through a book he takes off or just want to play with it. Hes a very happy baby always babbling and squealing away. he has got so much energy as well.
Any thoughts or suggestions?
I'm trying to remember at what age my son really started to talk, he's now 27 months and talks a lot, but I think it's fairly recent. All children develop differently, but if you are worried it's simple to see your GP and get a referral to a speech pathologist, just to get their opinion. Your DS will probably start chatting away like crazy soon.
As for reading, they don't really have a good attention span at 13 months. To me that sounds normal. My son just liked to point at the pictures and 'name' things at that age, he wouldn't sit still for a whole book.
Good Luck

mine was the same- all dada- mummy wasn't until almost 2- now he's saying caterpillar and other amazing words at 2.5 y.o. Don't worry too much until closer to 2...they're all different and start at different ages (as we saw in our mums group).

My mum is always telling me I did not speak a word or even baby talk until my little brother started talking. I would have been about 2.5yrs old.
My DD didn't really start talking until she was 2. She only just started calling me mummy about 3 or 4 months ago and DH was not called dad until just before xmas.
I've heard that you needn't be concerned until they are about the ages 3 to 5, as they all development so differently its hard to know if there is a problem or not.
DD is coming up 3 in May and very rarely can I get her to sit down and read a book all the way through.
Your DS could be going through separation anxiety or something it is a stage they go through when they won't leave your side. I know DD would rather play with the stones in the garden then play with her toys most of the time.
She always has the dog by her side the only time she wants me to play with her is when the dog won't obey her  Then I get dragged around lol.
My Boy Is 13mths Old Too Born 25.12.04 And He Babbles And Talks Another Type Of Language Were Not Sure What It Is !:d
He Says Mama Dad Dad And Goes Off With All Sorts Off Mumble Jumble!
Its Cute!
It Sounds Like Your Boy Is Doing Ok! I Wouldnt Stress About It Just Yet Give It A Couple Of Years My Eldest Son Had A Stutter And Still By Preschool He Still Had It And His Father Had One So It Can Be Heriditry But Now His Fine He Had A Lttle Speech Therapy And Is A Really Good Speaker Now!
Dont Stress Plenty Of Time To Really Worry About It Just Yet!:) ;)

I work in a developmental clinic with speech pathologists who say that as long as he has between 6-12 words by 18 months he's doing okay. I'm sure he'll be babbling away with the rest of us in no time!
My daughter had no words at about 18 months - but excellent comprehension. Then one day something clicked and now she chatters non-stop all day - quite delightful. So at 13 months you sound quite normal.
Ds is 13 months as well and doesn't say any words other than ta. Everything is ta or da. He seems pretty pleased with himself generally, so I'm sure everything is ok.
Can he hear you well? If you call him or make a sound does he turn his head?
Sometimes I copy the silly sounds ds makes, and he loves it. It's like we're having a pretend conversation.
