View Full Version : Best basic baby monitor?
We have an angelcare monitor that I love and will use for the belly when she arrives, but am needing a basic sound only monitor for DD1's room. She's in a single bed so I can't use the sensory pads, and don't really need them now she's 20 months old but I still have to get up to her a few nights a week and can't hear her if I don't have a monitor in her room (even though she's only across the hall).
I'd prefer to get one second hand (it won't be used for that long really...12 months max. I reckon) but want to know what brand is good. I have never looked in to sound only monitors before. It'll have to have at least 2 channels, cause it will be somewhat close to another monitor and they'll have to be on seperate channels and one that doesn't have much of (if any) a static noise.
So what's the best and how much are they new (incase I can't find one on e-bay!)
We have one that's also a teddy shaped night light...I think it's a tommee tippee one. It's been great for us, we've had it since DS was little. Much better than the first one we had that was picking up peoples phone conversations lol
I think ours cost around $100...but the one that was picking up phone convos was only around $50-$60.

Thanks, that's an issue too...we live in an apartment block, 47 units all up..lots of neighbours, lots of phonecalls...I don't need to hear them over the monitor!
lol nope, it gets rather annoying...I heard 2 ladies arguing over cleaning products once
Both the monitors we have used have two chanels, but the cheaper one picked up phone calls all the time. The one we have now does it occasionally, but in 4yrs we have probably heard 3 or 4 phone calls.
Maybe look around for something with more than 2 chanels if you live in an apartment, just so you have the option if things start to interfere.
Oh, one thing that bugs me with ours is that if you have a mobile phone charging near either part of the monitor then it interferes a bit...makes a humming noise...DH charges his phone at night beside the bed coz he sometimes has to go to work thru the night (tow truck driver).
The angelcare monitor does that with my mobile phone if I'm charging it....it goes a little bit staticy and occassionally you get that clicking noise that happens with mobile phones (don't know how else to describe it). The angelcare cost around $200 when we got it so think that's probably just something dodgy with the monitors.
Do any come with more than two channels? I didn't think that was even a possibility.
On can you turn the nightlight part off on the monitor? DD likes to be in complete dearkness when going to sleep so if that was just on all the time it would be useless for us.
Yup, you can turn the nightlight part off, there are two buttons on it...I think the buttons light up so you can tell if it's turned on, but it's only a really dull light. Ours is in storage right now so I can't check that tho.
I do remember seeing a monitor that had more than two chanels, but I have no idea where I saw it or even the brand. I'll let you know if I remember tho.

I got a BabyCom one on ebay for $36 (incl postage). It's got 2 channels, night light and sound level indicator. It plugs in or can take batteries. I like it because it's simple but works well, and I didn't need to spend much on it.
DS sleeps with us at night, but is in his cot for day naps (unless we're out with the pram). I use it during the day so that I hear him as soon as he wakes up, and it works great for that.

I have a Roger Armstrong Sleep Easy - think it was about $70 in Baby Target, it's white & blue
it has 2 channels. We have never had an issue with interference, and it has night light you can switch on or off on the baby unit
Oh I didn't realise that being able to adjust the sound was a feature. I assumed it was standard on all models (told you I hadn't looked into this at all!)
I definitely want that!
I did see the Roger Armstrong one's on e-bay but had never heard of them. Might be better than the teddy bear shaped one cause the only power point we have and can have in DD's room (my dad is an electrician but cause of the way the apartments were built we can't get another power point in there without removing walls and then re-doing them) is behind her toy box so a narrower base would be better.
Keep the suggestions coming! I will make my mind up by the end of the week!
Just wanted to say thanks to those that replied to this post. I had a mini baby shower yesterday and the main part of my present was a baby monitor so I don't need to worry now!
That's great  One less thing for you to decide on. Which one did you get?
