Hi All,

I am a little concerned about my 3mth old's bowel movements. we haven't had a poo for 7 days! My DS is breastfed with the occasional formula top up, but since he's been going a bit longer in the night I express breast milk and use that for top ups instead.

He did have thrush in his mouth last week and I gave him Nilstat drops for a few days which cleared it up. Am worried that the thrush may have gone to his bowels and is blocking them up.

What is anyone's experience with how many bowel movements is normal in young babies. I realise this could be asking about how long a piece of string is but some feedback wold be good before I run off to the docs.

cheers
Janerh

Dont fret hun! Breastfed babies can sometimes go up to 2 weeks without a bowel movement! Its because so much of the breastmilk is absorbed into their bodies there isnt much left over to come out!

If it goes any longer then the 2 weeks then Id head to the doctors but I wouldnt worry! Im sure you'll have a poo-nami any day now!

Not sure about the Nilstat etc. If your worried though, go to a dr or your CHN :hugs:

BUT my daughter was fully bf & would go 10days between bowel movements  Totally normal :)

dont worry to much you will know if your bubba is in pain. my dd now two has bn constipated from birth and i know how stressful it can be at the very young age of three months. maybe give you'r health nurse a buzz and see if its ok to give some coloxyl drops they might help. or maybe try giving your babys tummy a little massage might help? goodluck with it:thumbsup:

Everything sounds fine hun  Don't give coloxyl drops or anything like that yet, she's so young and it will really mess around with her little tummy... unless her poop is hard and painful to pass. It's virtually impossible for a breastfed bub to become constipated. Up to 2 weeks between poo's in normal  :D

if he seems unhappy and needing a poop, you can help him along by catching them when relaxed and lying him down bare-butt on cloth nappies and a thick towel and cycling and 'walking' the legs -- i sing a silly song while doing it to keep starfish amused and relaxed. usually works if just bouncing in her bouncy baby chair and wriggling her legs a lot hasn't done it for her. the poop is often voluminous, a virtual murrumbidgee flow, i just keep changing the nappy under her and tell her how great it all is  tummy massage also helps.

Thanks everyone.. that's great news to hear. Baby Love says the same - once every 2 weeks can be totally normal.

he is a happy baby all in all so I won't worry my head too much yet!

all the best to you all
