A DETERMINED little boy has given new meaning to going after the hard ball.
Fire officers were yesterday forced to pull the four-year-old from a ball-vending machine in one of their most bizarre rescues.
The youngster got in trouble after eyeing the prize at Tooradin Sports Club, south of Melbourne.
He climbed up the machine's chute to the point where witnesses said his head was showing in the glass ball-display area.
The boy then tried to climb out backwards but, with a ball wedged between his head and the wall of the chute, he couldn't back out.
He was left with half his body inside the machine, forcing club management to seek emergency help.
CFA officers spent 15 minutes easing the boy to freedom.
Club bistro manager Adam Rogan said locals were giving the boy's mother a ribbing but all had ended well.
"He's happy he's got an ice cream now. He's got a teddy from the firemen. He's rapt," Mr Rogan said.

Yes, it's a bit scary that he could get so far in, but I think essentially, his mother should have been watching him better. It can't be expected that everything is 'child proof', especially when money is required (vending machine) - an adult is expected to be there too.
