Hi Im new to this forum thing so please bare with me. I am a foster carer and I have been asked to care for a 24 weeker for those of you who dont know this means he was born at 24 weeks gestation, that is like 16 weeks early. Well I am to pick him up from hospital on Friday and he will be released on oxygen and suck feeds. I have not heard of suck feeds and I am wondering if anyone can give some insight as to what I can expect.

I have had 2 prems one 35 weeks and the other 34 weeks gestation, no oxygen or anything like that. The suck feeds mean he can feed from a bottle rather than through a tube in the nose so that is goodhe can suck feed. The main thing with prems is that they reach their milestones later than full term babies so you need to correct his age for when he was actually due. Prems tend to catch up to their peers by about age 2 or so and some can have eye, lung or hearing problems. Hopefully he will be fine.

I think you need to contact some of the premmie organisations for support and advice. Here is a link to www.preemie-l.org. This is a really good website and I found it useful when I had my babies.

Good luck and hope he thrives beautifully.

Hi, My son was born at 32 weeks, does this mean that any other children might come early too. If you naturally went into labour?

24 weeks preganant due in August

Thanks

My son was born at 36 weeks and my daughter at 32 weeks. Both did not oxygen. But one thing for sure they are really small. They look so fragile. But are hardy little baby.

I do not think that premie takes time to learn. Both of my kids are at par with babies at their age. In fact my daughter learn faster then most kids.

Hi, I had a 26 weeker last May so he is almost 1. He came home on oxygen for 6 months on his due date. How are you going with your little one?

Hi
It means he is sucking his feeds. Coming home on oxygen and suck feeds is good.
Cheers

Hi, I'm an Aussie (from Melb) but currently living in Wellington, NZ. Just after moving here I found out that I was pregnant which was exciting as we had been trying for some time. However at 5 1/2 months our excitement turned to shock as our son decided to make a very early arrival on 5/8/2004. He was born at 23 weeks. Fortunately he was a fighter and came home just before his due date without oxygen. It is certainly a tough road that we parents of premmies travel but it is definitely worth it.

I hope that all is going well for you Foster Mum, please don't hesitate to ask any questions that some of us 'old hands' might possibly be able to answer.
