Needing some help mums...my 3 month old baby boy will only sleep well when wrapped, but lately has been unwrapping himself at night and subsequently wakes up. If I get up and rewrap him he'll go back to sleep, but it's getting now to be on the hour which is a bit much.

I have tried all kinds of different wrapping styles and combinations - usually with arms by sides and wrapped quite tightly but little Houdini escapes them all!

Just wondering - has anyone got any good recommendations for baby wraps - I found info on one called the Kiddopotamus wrap which has velcro tabs on the sides to keep them in...(!) and another called the Lolito ezywrap - has anyone used these?
Is a sleeping bag also a good option, and at what age can you use these?

Also, when do people recommend stopping wrapping? Or do some babies like it for a long time?

Your advice is much appreciated!

I don't have any real advice, but you are definately not the only one with a houdini child!
My DD is 4 months old and also wont go off unless she's wrapped. DH and I often have to wrap and re - wrap her endlessly (gets v frustrating!). She's always the worst before her "big" sleep. We have the best results when she is wearing long sleeves (friction I think) and we wrap her in a thin flannel cot sheet (more fabric to work with!)
As for when to stop? I know a couple of 12 month olds who are still wrapped for their night sleeps, so I'm just going to see how it goes.
Hope this helps:o

HI i wrepped my DD since she was born and i found as she got a bit more active she would escape from her blankets. I was fed up wit rewrappin her all the ime so i went and bought the Kiddopotamus. It was about $35 but its was worth it for a little while until she figured out how to escape from that too. one night it was really hot and i decided just to try her to sleep wit a blanket on top of her and she slept perfectly. I think she was about 4 1/2 mths. But now the biggest hurdle is tryin to get her to sto;p rollin over in her sleep.
Just try different things till u find somethin that works for u and ur baby.

I love the Wonder Wrap. You can check it out at www.britobaby.com.au

My 7 1/2 month old will not sleep without being wrapped, but he is pretty co-ordinated and strong so we have tried a variety of wraps and wrapping styles. This wrap is great for us because I can wrap him with his arms up near his head so that he can reach his mouth, flap them about a little (which he seems to need to do) but they are captured in the wrap and there is very little escaping. He stays nice and snug, has the comfort of the wrap but there is no risk of him pulling it over his face like he used to and he rarely manages to pull a houdini.

Because he can roll we also use a Safe T Sleep (has a fabric cylinder that velcros around his middle) so putting him to bed does look a bit like putting him in a straight jacket. But it means he can continue to use his Wonder Wrap (they recommend you don't wrap a baby that can roll) and he spends the whole night all snuggled up, wrapped up tight like a big hug. We also don't have nocturnal wakings from cot wandering with its head banging, being stranded standing and blanket escapes.

My DD started kicking off her bunny rug at only 6 weeks and kept wrapping her up ... only to have her wiggle and kick her way free again. After about a week we gave up and as we had moved her to a cot tryed just a sheet over her ... which she worked out how to get out of very quickly ... regardless of how tight it was tucked in. We have not been wrapping her or tucking her in since 7 weeks as it was the only way which we could get any sleep and she is much happier now as it has been quite warm.

Good luck with it :o

Me: 26
DH: 27
DD: 11 wks

Thanks for your replies... we decided to bite the bullet and try him unwrapped and in his big cot . We figured we were getting up to rewrap him all the time, we may as well just see how he went unwrapped.
Plus my maternal health nurse said after about 4 months you shouldnt wrap as they can roll and not be able to use their hands to adjust themselves
The results have been quite good - we tried him in a sleeping bag on the colder nights and last night just with a sheet over the top tightly tucked in. The first few nights he was waking up still quite a lot but last night not as much, so it will hopefully get better!!
Good luck with all the other houdini bubs out there.........
