Just a quick one.

My cousins son is about 9.5 months old & is really limp all the time. He cant even sit on his own :( The reason I ask is that MJ has been sitting since about 5months, and is now crawling, walking around the furniture & standing on her own.

Is this something to be concerned about?

Thanks
RB

Both my 2 didn't sit until they could crawl which was 6mths. I would be a little concerned that the baby appears limp. Is the baby crawling?

i dont have much information unfortunately :( My mum is on holidays up in qld & another cousin told her that he is not sitting on his own at all & that he is limp all the time. As far as i can tell, he's not doing much of anything which would concern me.

I'm sure my mum will let me know more in the next day or two. She'll probably suss it out & tell me cousin to take him to a dr. She's got enough experience with 4 kids & 8 grandkids :)

Thanks

RB it sounds like your counsin's baby might have low muscle tone and if this is the case they need to get on to it quickly so he can have some physio. My daughter has this but only very mildly and she was a premmie by 6 weeks and was sitting up by then. She didn't need a lot of physio just 1 session and some exercises at home but it helped a lot. It definitely needs to be checked out by a doctor very quickly.

I was wondering how you went with letting your cousin know..

My DS2 didn't crawl or sit up until he was about 8 1/2 months old and I was told that it wasn't anything to worry about. He just started doing it all at once and now he is 2 and can run, jump, climb(and then jump off things ugh).

I don't think he was 'limp' though.

It is the limp bit that sounds like low muscle tone but it needs to be diagnosed. You can't cure LMT but it can be helped through physio, swimming, kindergym and lots of activity. Kids with this can also speak later and be constipated as the LMT is internal as well as external.

How did you cousin go RB, did she listen???

Sorry, meant to let you all know that my mum never got to visit her. She was only up there for a week. All we were told is that they (my cousin & her bf)think its funny, and that he's just lazy  Sorry but i'm the kind of mum that would have bub at drs and specialists to get exercises. My cousin has always been a silly girl, way to immature to look after herself let alone a child.

My other cousin was going to say something to her but who knows if she will. If i had contact info i would.

Thanks for caring, just wish i could do something but they live interstate.

Just spoke to my mum & thought i'd update & get some opinions.

My cousins son is now 12months old & only just started crawling. The way he crawls is on his belly commando style & only uses one arm.

I really wish i lived closer to her as i'm worried. She still thinks its funny & is not worried.

Thoughts/comments?

One of my sisters never crawled until she was 12 months, so mum told me yesterday, and didn't walk til 15 months. Its not ALWAYS something bad, some babies ARE just lazy.

DD2 has only just started sitting, at about 8 months, and only really just started rolling everywhere.....and she's nowhere near crawling yet. She still wasn't lifting her head off the ground properly at 6 1/2 months! One day it must have just 'clicked', and she started doing it all, after being nowhere near it. So maybe your cousins boy will too. Its good that he is actually moving around a bit now.

I would still have taken him to the docs if i was your cousin, just to be sure though.

my younger sister was a lazy bub she didnt sit up till she was 10 months, didnt walk till she was almost 2 and didnt talk till she was 2 and half. my mum had her at dr's askign for tests and stuff but they couldnt finda thing wrong with her. maybe its the same with this bub.
i can see your concern though.was the bub given much oppurtunity to play on the floor when they were younger? my mchn told me if you give lots of oppurtunity of floor play bubs will learn how to crawl and stuff as their muscles develop :) i think its true my ds was crawling at 6 months and walking at 10 months :)

DD1 did the commando crawl thing on her belly more like a caterpillar than crawling!! and couldn't sit up on her own until after she waslked at 9 months. She was never limp though - that bit would concern me. Is it possible to get her number from another relative and maybe ring up for a catch up about the babies a couple of times before you get into the muscle tone conversation?

my son is 4 now but he was born with pretty bad muscle tone, ie a floppy baby. it was only that i was insistent something be looked into that he got to see a paedeatrition. my ds sat at 10 months but that was due to daily physio. he also commando crawled until he was 12 months. he is fine now, but it is worth looking into as low muscle tone is either just that, or a symptom of something more serious, such as brain damage, muscle dystraphy, and all these things need to be ruled out.

Get him checked out but also suggest doing row row row you boat with the child, hold hands and rock gentle, it increases back strength. Also, lie child on back, stretch feet to ears- once again strengthens the 'sitting muscles'.... put him in a tire .... this helps to practice sitting, short periods of time at first.
