I've noticed a pooey type smell in the older mcns I'm using, this is when they are clean. I wash them in a cold rinse first then a hot long wash.

Was wondering what will help get rid of this smell?

Use a little bit of vinigar or bicarb sodar this has helped with the smell for me a few times.

Some say that using both together can wear the elastic quicker.

Thanks HS. Do you just put it in the rinse cycle or beggining of wash?

Funnily enough since switching to a powder with no fragrence I haven't had any smelly nappies anymore.
I read that some fragrences can bring out the dirty smells in your nappies, so I thought I'd switch and see.

Well after using the planet ark sensitive powder for over a month I haven't had any smelly nappies, and I'm saving even more money because I'm not buying as much detergent

If I have a particularly 'pooey' day. I put a capful of antibacterial wash (like dettol... but the generic one) into the fabric sofenter compartment. (mixed with water so it fills the compartment the way the softener would)

I also rinse all pooey nappies straight away!! So it doesn't have a chance to sit on the nappy and get into the fibres of the fabric.

and after a day in the sun... no smell

*Use less detergent OR more detergent (trial and error!)
*Use a detergent without fragrance.
*A hot wash with NO detergent but 1/2 cup bicarb soda followed by 1/4 cup vinegar in the rinse cycle. Rinse until the water is no longer sudsy. Only do this very occasionally as it will deteriorate the elastic and pul on nappies/covers.
*Line dry as much as possible. Try alternating between line drying and tumble drying if you need to.

Are they hemp nappies? Hemp has a tendency to become smelly at times, considering it is so absorbent and everything just gets sucked down into the core.

Having said that, the majority of my nappies are hemp (bar some bamboo ones) and I've never really had much of a problem. I cold wash with Planet Ark detergent (about 1/2 tbsp, no prerinse) and line dry mostly (have use the dryer a bit more over winter). There are odd occasions when I feel they need a bit of a hot wash (if I've been using the dryer a bit more than usual).
