How do you administer losec to your baby?

The dr said to cut in half and dissolve in water - he said the chemist will specify how much water, but they had no idea! They couldn't print out a CMI either.

The chemist said that it's usually an adult medication, so they didn't know how much would be appropriate. It says to dissolve tab in half a glass of water. I can't give DD that much..

if you can find out which chemist near you is a compounding pharmacy you can get them to compound it into a suspension for which is a liquid they make it up specaily so that it is 2mg per ml

where abouts do you live i may know if there is one near to you, failing that call the gastro det at your nearest childrens and they can tell you

My Dr gave me a 5ml and a 10 ml syringe without the needle. I popped the 1/2 tablet in the end, closed it and filled with with water or breast milk. Shake it to disolve and break up the tablet. Not all the tablet comes out the first time so you may have to fill it again and shake. Make sure you get a larger syringe than the panadol ones or the pellets from the tab will not pass thru.

Hey thanks for your replies!

Mikenzees mum - I'm in Darwin, but I'll go through the yellow pages to check out the chemists.
Liquid would be much easier to give!

Great idea putting the tablet in the syringe itself, I dissolved it in a cup first, but then couldn't get all of the pellets into the syringe lol Will give it a go next dose.

Thanks again ;)

i

I too give my son Losec.

I was told to put half the tablet into a syringe and add 1-2 mls of cooled, boiled water.

The manufacturers of losec state that it works best in-between feeds, and my paed told me not to give it with feeds as they may be turned off their only source of food.

Good luck:wave:

Hi Smiles,
It is sooo hard wokring out how to use the Losec. We have grown out of Reflux now so no more Losec. I tried the componded version, very pricey and I strongly felt that in my sons case, wasnt as effective.
I went back to the tablet and saw far better results. I popped the half tab in the syringe (I used a panadol one) and drew up some water. I let it sit in there for about a minute to dissolve and would shake it very gently as you shouldnt crush Losec as it destroys the little beads which are the important parts! I would then squirt it in his mouth (he would open for it he was so used to it) and then draw up some more water and squirt it in the mouth again to make sure I got it all. I would do this a few times. Worked a treat!

Good luck. Its so hard and just try and experiment and see what works for you!

liquid losec is around $60 for a 2 week supply....unless u tube fed, then kids hospital is $25 a month, Just work it out, dissolve in waterever amount of water....it doesn't matter as long as the mg dose is correct. the smaller amount of water the easier to give. With losec as long as u disolve and don't crush all is good!!! Liquid losec is also very unstable and must be kept cold all the time!!!

Doesn't matter before or after a feed!!!
