For those who had a c-sec in public hospital, how long was your stay in hosp? I will be in Mater Mothers Public (Brisbane).
(In private I understand it to be 5 days-ish?)

I stayed 5 days after DD, and 3 days after DS (I chose to leave early) and had the midwives visit me at home the next couple of days and then take my staples out at home

I had my c section in a public hospital as a private patient. You have to pass wind (to check there were no nicks made to your bowel) and make bowel movements before you can be discharged. That seems to be pretty standard anywhere as a minimum. For me I had my c section Monday night and left friday morning at my request.

I had my DD at the Mater Mothers (public). They say the norm is 3 - 5 days. I left after 4 days, but would have left earlier if it wasn't for complications when she was born.

Thankyou, that helps a lot. I thought it might have been around the 3 day mark - if no problems.

Can I ask further . .(tho think this has been asked elsewhere) - what was your experience with staples or stiches? And do you get a chioce?

I will be asking these things to the Ob as well, but I don't see him until 36wks when I will be requesting the c-sec. So I'm just wanting to be as knowledgable as I can when I speak to him. And to help me in my birth plan.

My elective c/s was Friday lunchtime and I left after breaky Monday morning. Would have left Sunday after lunch but had to wait for Tom to be checked out and the Dr wasn't in that weekend.

Oh and I had a sub cutaneous stitch, one stitch holds the lot together, fantastic! Barely felt it being removed.

This is my post op scar "gallery", just to give you an idea.

I had disolving stitches and basically no scar. The line where my stomach finishes and hair starts is just pinker

I was 6 days with my first and 2 days with my 2nd (my choice - and against hospital advice).

Wow JATS, your scar is so faint! So stiches are pretty good for no scar? Did you actually tell the Doctor to take his time stiching (ie: do a good job) to help minimze the scar? I'm wondering how I can word it to 'politely show my confidence in his abilty to stich me up nicely' ? As an elective C-sec, I may be able to book him to do it? Unless I go into spontaneous labour first - then I will get who ever is on duty?

Thank you so much for this info ladies - I really appreciate it.

My OB gave me a choice between stitches or the continual stitch with the beads at the ends. He prefers the continual stitch and I have heard the scar is better so thats what we are going with.

They usually have a preferance but I think its fine to ask especially if you really don't want something like the staples.

My Dr told me as I was being preped not to worry, the scar wouldn't be noticeable after a few months.

I had only found out about the c/s the day before so was a mess in pre-op, I guess he saw a young mummy to be in need of ANY reassurance, and women in general can be a bit vain so that's what he picked to say. I don' know if he actually made extra effort.

Day after the op he came in to check the wound (as one other woman he did the morning he did me had major issues) and he commented on how great my wound looked already! as in:

"Wow! that's got to be my best work. Looks a week post op already!"

He and my GP both said it was probobly 40% his work and 60% the fact I was in peak physical condition. Regular exercise, great diet etc.

Better condition you are in the better your recovery is likely to be.

BTW I was up carrying Tom to breaky the morning after. Before that I showered and shaved with minimal discomfort. In my experience if you keep active it hurts less.

I don't remember asking for a specific type of stitch or anything like that but I do remember the middie saying if I had anyone stitching me up it would be your Ob he does a really neat job and he came down to check on me the day after. To be honest I have never looked at the scar and never had any sort of pain so never really worried about it too much, after all my stretchies probably won't be doing slinky bikinis any more anyway, but I am not into the full leotard either. I will have to find a happy medium.
