I have a 2 month old who spits up quite frequently, even long after a feed. She is generally a happy baby, but I have noticed that her breath smells acidic and she does have nasal congestion.

I have put her on Zantac for a couple of days now, but I just wanted to ask:

Do all babies with silent reflux cry a lot? She never seems to cry..

although not my own experience (DD had reflux and cried alot) but my aunty (who had a baby only 5 years ago) had a baby boy who was sick ALL THE TIME - but was super happy... He hardly cried or was out of sorts. A model baby really, only that he threw up alot...

If it continues though - I'd seek medical advice as you wouldnt want you little one to not be thriving (if gaining weight and all seems fine though - that's ok too!)....

Hope that helps.

Our almost six week old has reflux but thankfully is a "happy chucker" as my doctor put it (as opposed to "not-so-happy chuckers"). He even smiles when he's had a particularly big spew.

It's gross, yet so sweet at the same time:rolleyes:

Yep, my DD was a 'happy chucker' as the pead put it. They really only tend to medicate when bub is in discomfort because the ant-acid doesn't stop bub from refluxing only stops the burning sensation that they are feeling.

If bub is bottle fed then you could try adding a thickner to the formula or get a formula specifically designed for refluxing bubs otherwise if you are BF'ing and bub is gaining weight then i wouldn't be concerned. But i know it can be a pain with all the extra washing! Bibs come in handy from a very early age.

I had a not so happy chucker and never put her on medication as I wasn't informed of any. I was told though that if bubs is a happy chucker they don't need medicine as it isn't burning them IYKWIM

Thing with my little one is not throwing up as such, just very little spit ups. So that's why I thought it was silent reflux.. Just wanted to know if silent reflux babies cry?

My bubs would spit up after most bottles, just a little but enough to be a pain(for me). He was labelled a happy chucker by CHN and recommended 1st change formula 2nd doctors for medication. Went from s26 gold to s26 reflux formula, noticed improvement straight away. He is now 5 1/2 mths and occasionally spits up but nothing like before. I also am concious of how he is handled after he feeds (obviously not much straight away). We are now starting solids as he has gone off his 10.30pm feed, which means he now only has 4 bottles, which is why i'm keen to start solids (rice cereal).
Do reflux babies spit up formula only or will he do the same with baby food?

Hi Marna,

Yep, Paed prescribed 10mg Losec daily ( half a tablet twice daily). Have found a difference in the spitting up - not so often, and seems to be a little bit more settled than before. Also, 4mg of Mylanta when needed. But trying to get something cold and chalky into bubs is a battle as she just spits it out and I don't blame her really - it's disgusting stuff. So I don't bother giving it to her. Other than that he also told me to avoid milk - I'm breastfeeding. I'm assuming its just incase of a milk protein allergy. Which I'm pretty certain she has, and just the general things to do for a reflux bub - raised mattress, 30 min upright after a feed etc, etc.

 Anita
