I would say up to 3 months after the engagement.

Why dont you hire a hall?

We had our engagement party approx 2 months after we got engaged.. We had it at my mum's partners place. It was awesome!!! My SIL got engaged in november last year and only recently had her engagement party..

I think it more depends on when you are having your wedding. Like if its already been 7months and your getting married soon, I wouldnt worry about it at all. But if it's not for another year, then thats ok. Does that make sense?
We had ours 3 months after we got engaged at my MIL's and are getting married in April next year.
Do you have a date for your wedding yet?

My bestie got engaged sometime around new years, but had her party last weekend (the wedding is sometime in November 08).

I guess for them it was a good move... they'd only been together about 4 months when they got engaged and I think it was good they waited until they'd been together about a year before having their party... because it made it more 'serious.' (I'll admit I wasn't sure it would last... especially since they were in some embarrassingly lovey-dovey period you go through when you first get together with someone).

I'd say have one whenever you want, but it's probably best it's not too close to your wedding...
