Hi
I am thinking about weaning my 10 week old DS but dont know what formula to use. What would you recommend? S26? Karicare? Nan? I am thinking Nan because that is what they used when my DS was in the special care nursery.
Also has anyone not boiled water? Would it be ok to give purified water?
Thanks

Hi, my daughter started with comp feeds in hospital on Nan Ha1 and when we later had breastfeeding problems, she continued with Nan Ha1 and we haven't looked back.
From what I've read and from advice from the health nurses, Nan Ha1 is meant to be as close to breastmilk as possible. The nurse also said that she shouldn't get constipated on Nan Ha1 and I would have to agree. Her poos are army green and soft, sometimes with yellowy mustard seeded look, and have never been like plasticine - which is what other formulas can do.
In the supermarket Nan Ha1 is about $19 but I have found if you go to the chemist or a Pharmacy warehouse, I can get it for $15.
I have always used boiled water, so I don't know about using purified water????

I would still boil the water. Purification does not kill germs or bacteria which may be present in the water.
I had to try a few before I found one that my DD would drink, but you can buy them in sachets instead of investing in a full can. My DD had Karicare but DS wont have a bar of formula so Ive stuck with the breastfeeding for both. Hope you had better luck than I did.

My 7 month old has both boobies & karricare, My MIL would kick my bum if i used s26, she actually recomends heinz for 2 reasons- its cheaper And doesnt cause constipation! I started karricare without telling her and as it turns out thats her 2nd choice, her 3rd chioce would be nan! Everyone will give you different advice on whats better so good luck!:o(& if you can please still use the boiled water:))
I think different formulas work for different bubs. Heinz was one of the only ones that didn't constipate my boys. Although if you have been breastfeeding and go straight to formula this can cause constipation anyway until they get used to digesting something different.

Heinz and the organic formulas are the only ones that do not contain Genetically modifies organisms. Bellamys, Babynat are the org. ones.

There is no "best" formula. Some people will argue strongly that S26 or S26 Gold is best, while other people argue that NAN is the best and all others cause constipation...
The only "best" one is the one that suits your child. And every baby has a different sensitivity to formulas, their ingredients and their composition so you really just need to try them and see. Baby "A" gets constipated or windy on one formula even though Baby "B" handles it fine. My daughter was on a slightly older style formula (SMA) and I can't see that she suffered for it, although I was told by some that she shouldn't be on it.
If he had NAN in the nursery then that's a good one to start with for him. Unless there is a very strong reaction, allow at least 2 weeks trial on any formula to give bub a chance to get used to it. Swapping formulas around more often than that can just upset their tummy more.
To help make sense of some of the different types of formula and codings on the formulas, here's a guide: Bottle Feeding - Formulas and Drinks (http://www.cyh.com/HealthTopics/HealthTopicDetails.aspx?p=114&np=302&id=1819)
AR = Anti reflux formulas. These are thickened slightly to help them stay down.
HA = partially hydrolysed. Proteins are partly broken down to help lessen the risk of developing allergies. Not to be used when bub has already developed allergies or excema.

My daughter drinks Nestle lactogen she has had bad wind and refulx when i was breastfeeding and on any other formula and this is what suited her best and im not complaining it only costs around $10.I started her on sd26 but that one was a no no she threw up everywhere.
wish you luck in finding one that suits ur bub.:)
hi :)
I wont give you advice about the formula choice (Jack uses Karicare gold .. but only cause that is what they gave in hospital) - each baby is SOOO different... the only tip that I definately agree on is to start with the sachets... they are only about a $1 each and that way you can try a brand without buying a whole tin ..
About the water... my CHN said that you have to boiled it even if you have bought it in a bottle... there are germs that are killed in the boiling process (water is suppose to boil for 5 minutes... )
good luck with bubs

I tried a few before I found the ones I use now. I use Bellamy's organic or Babynat. They're both organic and they're really good.

I started using S26 Gold after i couldnt breastfeed, Bub was going really well, though i found that he had lots of wind. And later on, he was spewing alot, so I then chnged to S26 AR recommended by the childcare nurse. He only took it for 2 days, because you will have to changedthe teat size etc... and i found that he spew even more and it was really messy. So then I changed him to Nan gold, it was going great, though he didnt seem to be full after one feed and never slept through the night, because the formula was easy to digest. and he poo was very green and smelly.
So now he is on Heinz, and it been very good. He poos is nice and yellow and doesnt smell too strong, also he is not throwing up anymore. And the formula is Cheap to buy. And i think that to find the best formula for your bub, is to try different one and see how it goes.
bub never had a problem in changing the taste.
We use s26 gold. No probs with wind etc.. We tried the plain s26 and also the Karicare gold. I think the s26 mixes better than the Karicare. The Karicare seemed to leave grainy bits on the bottle.
We are switching to the plain s26 after DS turns 6 months old.
