Hi,

Just wondering if anyone has had the cervical cancer vaccine while they have been breastfeeding?

I read the pamphlet on the inside of the vaccine and it says its okay for lactating women, but I am still a little worried about having it. I am currently 25 and I don't want to miss out on it being free for me :D

Any info would be great!

This may be slightly off topic (ie I have no idea about the 'lactation side of it') but depending on your circumstances (and I have no idea about these) there may be no point getting it.

I teach, and two weeks ago all our girls got their 2nd needles. We were having a discussion in class and two of the girls had said that their older sisters (who I'd also taught - now 20/21) were advised by their doctors not to bother with it - one is engaged and the other already married. Their doctors basically said that since they were in long term relationships, there was only 2 chances that they would have issues with the particular virus being targetted - either they already had it, or if either partner was not manogamous.....now I know that these days marriage isn't always for life, so there are always possible risks, but just thought I'd throw that in there....hope someone can help you with the info you really want to know

I'm in the same position as you charleesmum (need to get my act together before 27th bday ticks over!)

** I did think that the cervical cancer vaccine was immunisation against an STD so let's say you're only going to sleep with the one monogomous person is there any point to it??

I agree, I have heard the same and I have asked my father who is a doc and he has told me the same thing. He says you are much less likely to get it if you have one partner, but there is still a risk. (I guess its just better to be on the safe side :D )

I read on the pamphlet details that they tested it on 995 lactating women and their babies and the results were comparible.

charleesmum and Cordelia if you do get it done, are you able to please let me know if there were any side effects to you or your bub?

You would think they would give more info than "the results were comparible" considering there are a lot of breastfeeding mothers. :banghead:

Will post more if I find more info.

You are eligible for the free vaccine up until you turn 27........

So just make sure you get all 3 (i think it is 3) shots before your 27th birthday.

I too ask my DR about this. She was unsure about while breastfeeding...she was under impression there was not enough research yet. She said that you are at higher risk, like the others have said, if you are not in a monogomous relationship and have several sexual partners. I think she said it costs about $150 per needle. The needles are only free if they are done before you turn 27. She said in my position she would just wait till finish breastfeeding and if think necessary to get needle get it done and just pay the money....therefore not stressing on any undesirable effects on bub. Just thought I'd share this opinion...
