Hi everyone, I need to have a rant and see if anyone else out there has had any issues with the Royal and the topic of bottlefeeding? I'm 36 weeks and have just been to the clinic to see the doc. We discussed my intent to bottlefeed my baby (as we have at every appointment) and I feel as though I'm constantly being interrogated and refused information. At todays app I asked which formula would be a good one to start with only to be given the response "we are a breastfeeding friendly hospital, I cannot tell you what formula to use". Is there anyone out there that can help me and give me some advice on a formula? No amount of bullying by the Royal is going to change my mind but I still need to have some help from somewhere.
If anyone can do that for me I would really love to hear from you. Thanks

Hi there, most hospitals will react like that. with formula there is alot of different formulas on the market, some people choose to buy organic formula, there is also formulas designed for reflux and colic and so on. I found when seth was born and i introduced formula at 6weeks he had Heinz brand formula. then when he hit 6months he developed reflux so put him on s26 AR (anti reflux) he is slowly growing out of the reflux and we are slowly introducing s26 progress and then full cream milk in a few weeks time. i hope this helps

I breastfed untill DD was 6mths. After that I gave her S26 Gold. Are you going to give your bub the colestrum? Even if you don't want to breastfeed you can express it. I think that it is important.
The reason he won't recommend a formula to you is because there is a small chance that your newborn will have a poor reaction to the formula and this could come back to bite your caregiver on the bum. If he doesn't mention any formula brand or name, you can't later say "well you told me to use X".
When I offered some formula to my son, it was the Nestle NAN Gold. It was supposed to be the closest one to breast milk and thus more easily digested than others.
beany they all claim to be the closest to breastmilk...
the reason i linked to the bottle section is because if you go through there are heaps of threads on which formula is best etc :)

Thanks for your tips so far guys I really needed them I was just so damn frustrated when I got home from the doc earlier. It makes sense that they won't say a particular brand in case it comes back to haunt them but it would be nice if they told you that was why instead of making you feel like a bad mum before you even have the chance.
with my first son i used s26 and he went great with it, when the twins came i tried them on that but it gave them tummy aches so we swapped to NAN gold and they are doing alot better on it

My maternity hospital gave my son Karicare Gold when he wasn't putting on weight. That was the one they were using for comp feeding.

:hugs: So sorry to hear that you are having a hard time with the RHH. But if bottlefeed is what you want to do then you stick with it  It's your baby your choice!
I have a family member that is a midwife and she said the best types of formula is any type of in house brand at the chemist. It's the S26 but you are just paying for the fancy labelling. It's the same formula!

I used Karicare Goats based formula! :)
Oh I'm so sorry to hear that you're not getting the support from the hospital. I guess there's a big emphasis on breastfeeding but it's your right to decide how you feed your bub and the hospital should respect and support you in that.
I breastfed my kids but when I did give a bottle here and there I used S26 gold. I never tried anything else as this one seemed fine but I only really gave them a couple of bottles a week anyway.
Maybe you can email all the formula companies requesting samples of their formulas so you can test them out?? Most of the companies would have samples to send and would be quite happy to - that way you can try before you buy the large tins.
Good luck with it all!

The hospital I had DS in I actually over heard a midwife recommend nan as a good formula. She actually said they only use s26 at hosi as they donate the formula they said as soon as you get out switch to nan:thumbsup:

I am using NAN Gold HA for my new born and he is doing extremely well on it. I recommend a HA formula as it is easier for their tummies to digest in the first 3months, and they are less likely to become constipated on it. Well that is from my experience with my two boys anyway. My first son got constipated on normal formulas so I have my second son on the HA formula to as a preventative.
Goodluck choosing a formula, it is a shame noone would help you but Hsopitals arent allowed to give or talk about formula. Anymore I noticed a sign up about it when I went in to have my bubs last week.

Hi,
I can understand your frustration. I used S26 Gold and found my daughter took to it well and is gaining weight beautifully. It retails from $18 - $25 a tin depending on where you go but it seems to be good for us. The only thing I regret from not breast feeding is I was on tender hooks until she was about 3 months old as I felt I put her at risk with not giving her some of my ammunity. Luckily she was born in summer so the chance of colds were lower. All the best on your decision.

Hey, I just wanted to say thanks for all your tips and advice. It makes sense that they don't nominate a particular brand when I think about it. Still it doesn't cost them anything to be nice about it! Nevermind, i'll just try one and see how it goes. Does the Royal provide bottles while your there? Or should I take a few in? Sorry, I know I'm worrying too much but I want to finish packing the bag asap as there isn't really long to go and I'm getting very anxious  .
Most hospitals do have bottles but if you're bottle feeding right from the start, they prefer you take your own equipment in (as you will obviously have it and so that another mother that doesn't intend to bottle feed can use their equipment for expressed milk/formula if their milk doesn't come in etc.).
I would take a few in - probably 6 should be fine. You can use the hospitals steriliser though I'm sure.
Just be sure to label your bottles really well just in case they go in with other peoples bottles.

The girl I shared a room with when I had DD was bottlefeeding from the word go and the Royal supplied her with bottles and formula while they were in hospital. Of course once you go home you need to have your own formula and bottles :)

hello
I breastfeed & had my baby on formula since birth as i never had good supply, due to hemorrahaging!!:crying: till he was 3 months old then he was on formula.. no breast.
In the hospitals they use s26 well they did in perth, but my baby had reflux so we put him on karicare thickened so good!!:) its the best my personal opinion i had tried so many, a little more expensive but s26 makes alot of babies constipated.
Hope that helped a little
