View Full Version : Foods that affect babies
Hi. Just wondering if anyone knows how long it takes for spicy food, windy food, chocolate etc to get into breastmilk and how long it lasts for?
Also I'm wondering about hair dye. Is it OK to breastfeed baby a couple of hours after using hair chemicals?

I think from memory I have been told 8-10 hrs before what you've eaten comes through your into your breastmilk.
Hi there!
Generally speaking, you do not need to change your diet when breastfeeding. This is a big myth. Your baby will be fine with your regular diet. I ate all the alleged "no go" foods (garlic, broccoli, chocolate etc) and there was no problem. If my baby was unsettled it was usually a result of overstimulation (which is not much when you are a baby, especially in the first 3 months) or something else. Your baby will be used to your regular diet as they would have recieved it through the placenta in pregnancy.
You will be fine with colouring your hair. Just be wary of alcohol (it gets into your bloodstream. So if you have a drink wait a good few hours before feeding to be on the safe side)
I suggest that you contact the Australian Breastfeeding Association. They will have some great advice for you. Here is a link to their website: http://www.breastfeeding.asn.au/
All the best and relax!
hi,
i have continued eating my normal food, and i eat loads of garlic and spicy food. my DS has had no side effects. what really effected his feeding was when i went on the mini pill and had my first period. he was not interested in my boob, so much so that i have since stopped taking it and we are now back to normal with feeding (thankgod).
have a good afternoon

You ladies are lucky. My little one gets terrible tummy upsets from onion, cauliflower, broccoli, cabbage, pizza, german sausages, hot n spicy kfc(damn it).... then runny, red bum if i have any citrus fruits or dishes with lots of tomato in it.
Hi all
I just thought I'd add my piece to the food and breastfeeding topic... I used to think it was piffle - old wives tales... But I can say without any doubt - my baby really goes off by breastmilk and is quite unsettled after I've eaten a curry! Bugger I say!!
Cheers!

I was told in no uncertain terms to not have any soft cheeses and sushi etc. whilst pregnant :( Do I have to keep up this rule whilst breastfeeding or am i ok to eat all the "normal" foods again. Other than these foods i kept eating all my regular stuff, but would love some Brie :p
Thanks

coz I ATE everything (bear in mind i dont drink, smoke, etc) and this doesn't bother Thomas! Plus as I'm planning to go back to work sometimes soon, I breastfeed and bottlefeed also, and again my lil fella doesn't mind at all...and he's a healthy & happy baby!
So if you feel like chocolate, then go have some :D
Afterall we want a happy Mum, happy mum means a happy baby :D

hi Rainbowbrite,
The food restrictions whilst pregnant are so that you don't catch listeria (a type of food poisoning) because this can cause a miscarriage. AFter you have the bub, eat what you like (but watch alcohol as mentioned earlier).
