My 9 week old DD has reflux and has been prescribed Zantac. She is a formula fed baby and because of her vomiting and painful reflux we have just switched her to GOat milk Formula - which I think is helping (She was on NAN HA then Pepti-Junior presc by paed) (drinking more and more settled). Not sure why it helped though. Just wondering those who formula feed their bubs - what formulas have you found help? If any...and how do they help.

My nephew had reflux and he was on thickened formula. It helped because the formula was so thick, it couldn't come back up his throat. I'll ask my sister what formula he was on and get back to you!
DS had mild reflux...it didn't really bother him tho, just me coz it seemed like the whole feed was coming straight back up all over me :barf: We never bothered with medications, we just used a thickened formula, he was on S26 AR. My nephew also had reflux, his was a little worse than DSs and actually seemed to hurt him a little, and he was on Karicare AR.
It might be worth trying either a thickened formula, or adding a thickener to the formula you are using...I think it's Karicare that makes the thickener.
I also would try not to keep changing formula types/brands too often coz that can also upset things. DSs reflux was worst when he was having S26 Gold formula, and alot of people I know have had issues with the gold type formulas making their bubs either throw up or constipated.
:hugs: my DD has reflux and other Gi issues and she is on Neocate which is a basicly s step up from pepti JR as she couldnt tolerate pepti either , how its helped with kenze was it stoped her pooing and pukeing blood which is great but no means was it a miracle cure for the reflux, or other GI issues we are yet to find that, so if you figure it out PLEASE let me know, lol if i figure it out il be sure to tell you as well
Good luck, welcome to the reflux rollercoaster not a place you want to be :hugs:

My twins have reflux and i found that Novolac AR is the best for us. We tried karicare ha ar and it was awful but once we changed over to the novolac ar there was only minimal spitting up not whole feeds.

Thanks girls...well I think we will stick to the Goat Milk Formula for now. If anything I think I would add thickner to her feed - not change formula. I am worried about using the thickner as she has lazy bowels already! Not constipated only lazy and has a movement only every 3 or so days. Does the thickner cause constipation? ANyone know??

Just found out my nephew was on Karicare thickened. I'm not sure if it causes constipation.
the thickener can cause constipaion and can also slow the bowels and the tummy

Hi,
I read that your DD was on Pepti Jnr and now on Neocate. My dr just gave me Pepti Jnr to try today, how long before you knew that your DD was not responding to the Pepti Jnr and you needed to change to Neocate? Does the Neocate now help? my DD has had problems passing bowel motions her whole like, and since 3mths has "gurgling stomach" all night long, reflux, eczema etc etc the list goes on. The Paed is now saying it is a milk protein intolerance.
Any advice would be helpful.... Thanks! (By the way, first time on a forum like this, hope I have done it all correctly!!!)

We have tried just about everything with our little man also. He has had reflux since about 3 wks old and that 'gurgling' tummy as mentioned by Ashismum. As I could not Breastfeed we started him on S26 Gold which made him vomit and scream pretty much all day. Was then put on S26 AR which was so thick he could not drink it no matter what teat we tried. The GP then suggested Novalac AR which was fantastic for the reflux (thickens when in tummy rather than in bottle) but made him constipated. He then came down with gastro so the paed put him on the Karicare AR HA which made him worse (he screamed and screamed). Paed then changed him to Karicare Lactose Free with thickener in case he was Lactose intolerant. He then went off his bottle competely :banghead: . We were then told to put him on Neocate but that tasted so foul he would not take it at all. Finally I took him to see my old GP who ran tests and said that he was definitely now lactose intolerant (most likely from the gastro) and put him on the S26 LF without thickener. Seems to be making a lot of difference (he likes the taste and will at least drink this one) so we will see how we go. I just have to be so careful not to move him around too much after his bottle so I dont end up wearing it. So sick of changing formulas. Sorry to rant - but to get back to the original question - would definitely recommend the Novolac just be wary of the constipation issues :D
Hi Ladies
I am just wondering if anyone had problem with the S26 AR thickened formula. I've noticed since we've started using it that our DS is waking more during the night?? We are actually only using it in the evening at the moment as I am started to wean and am breastfeeding still during the day. We were using S26 LF and he seemed okay on that so am wondering whether to switch back. My DH isn't convinced it's the AR but I just thought I'd see if anyone else had had this experience.
Cheers

Agree with the above, except found that formula thickener just resulted in thicker vomit and pepti jnr resulted in disgustingly smelly vomit.
Has anyone tried soy with any success?

My twins were put on s26 gold from 1wk old, they were grizzley, spewy, waking every 1/2 or so, they were just soo unsettled, not too mention constipated. They then both went onto Karicare HA AR, which has helped one of DS but the other one is now trying s26 soy which now is making him grizzley, more spewy, unsettled and constipated AGAIN!! GRR. Both my boys still spewed with HA AR but not as much, it didnt stink as much but it was pretty thick!!
The DS on soy also has mylanta before and after every feed, and they both have brauers (sp?) stomach calm before or after each feed, if i cant get stomach calm i use Colic Relief. It helps 9/10 times too!!
Good Luck, xx krystal

Can anyone help?:smiliedance::reindeer:
My 4mth old little boy has screamed for the last 4mths non stop and everyone kept telling me inc a Pediatrican it was just Colic.
My bub was in a lot of pain and heartbreaking for him and me as a new mum.
After my mother did some research she found a formula called neocate and phoned the doctor begging him to give us some and trial it as she thinks he was allergic to cows milk.
Amazing...I have a new child..an absoulte delight, he's happier, and we are happier because it has been shear hell!
My baby for the first time in 4mths actually smiles and giggles.
It bought tears to my eyes.
HOWEVER now my Pediatrican wont give me a script to buy it cheaper from the chemist as it is $58 a tin and we go through 3 per week and get the medicare rebate UNTIL I now switch to pepti junior formula because it is 'cheaper' on the government and apparently better for the baby.
If its better for the baby why is it cheaper?
I am really confused and cant seem to find any info to compare the two and not sure what to do?
Baby is tolerating it but fusses when he eats now.

It isnt 'better' for baby
Pepti Jr is a step down from Neocate as it isnt as 'broken' down so there is a chance the body can still recognise the protiens etc & 'react'.
Apparently the Gov prefers Paeds to get patients to try Pepti first before going to Neocate because of costs but also because whilst some kids are still intolerant to cows milk they can handle a small amount & some do go ok on Pepti.
That being said any doctor worth their weight would see the vast improvement in bubs etc & would have organised the script !
With my DS2 ive been lucky that the two Paeds we have seen & GI were willing to give the scripts no dramas !

Great thankyou for your comments.
YES, I am pushing the Paed to give me the script...considering he is supposed to be one of the best on the Sunshine Coast!
He hasn't been very helpful at all.
I fortunately have a terrific GP who is looking into it for me further and has got me a number of sample tins to tie me over until we sort this out
What a drama for mothers...to have to fight with doctors just to ensure we have and do what is best for our babies

Oh im hearing ya !
It took me 7mths to get anyone to truly listen to me !!!
Luckily I had managed a few trial & sample tins by then but gosh its ridiculous that we have to fight so hard !!!!
I really hope that things get sorted for you soon :hugs::hugs:
