View Full Version : SIL is going to Sutherland hospy...
... so I was wondering, anyone been throught the midwives at Sutherland Hospital :detective:
Is it a birth centre?
continued care?
or case load midwifery?
..or is it caesar city? :(
Tell me your stories :)
TIA
(SIL would join BH but she's probably just reading this procrastinating instead, I expect LOL)

From what I understand, Sutherland Hospital has a good reputation for care of its patients.
My mum and Grandma have both been patients there (not in maternity though!), and were cared for very well, so I can't see that the maternity section would be much different.
I'm guessing that being a public hospital, they would probably do shared care.
 and it sounds like a new place too.'
I just hope it's not all intervention happy :( no one needs that.
It's not a new hospital, it has been there for years. It's just that it not long ago underwent a major renovation and had new wings etc added.
There would be figures available somewhere on it's intervention figures - maybe try the NSW Dept of Health?
I had DS there in March 04 and that was only about 6 months after they opened the new hospy - yes they built a new one and nocked down the old one. I'm going there for my 2nd one that is due in Jan 08. I had the lovliest midwives last time and the one i've got this time seems nice too (she was in the background of my first appointment, a trainee was asking all the questions).
They have 2 really nice birthing suites with double beds and full sized spa baths. I gave birth to DS in a regular labour room that still had a good sized bath (that i didn't get to use) but only a single bed (with city views :D). In the maternity ward, all the rooms are either single or double and they try to only have one person in each room (which obviously sometimes can't be helped), all the rooms have their own bathroom and shower.
I was induced and had a 4 1/2 hour natural labour with a slight tear with a wonderfully supportive midwife and a doctor present (which apparently doesn't happen often, i found out later).
I have nothing but praise for The Sutherland Hospital, and often compare my experience to my SIL who went across the road to Kareena and ended a 20hour labour with a disappointing C-sec. Don't even get me started on the midwives!
Thanks people!
Southo sounds great then!
Wish I went there  .... and avoided a c/s :(
Anymore words on Southerland hospy? :detective:
From previous threads some may remember my disgust with St George hospital. They are supposed to be renown for their midwiffery/maternity services.
Anyway we moved and i missed out on antenatal classes (due to St G staff inefficiency) and enquired at Sutherland about doing them there.
They were helpful on the phone - it was no drama to fit us in - even told we didnt have to pay for the classes straight away (we did) and after the first antenatal class approached the midwife taking the class - to ask her what our chances were of transferring. She took care of everything and 4 days later we had a booking in appointment. I have had only 1 appointment so far - with a doctor and that went well - i assume tomorrow i will see a midwife.
The hospital is brand new and best of all clean feel ing (again, not like St G) - ALL the midwives ive spoken to seem really nice, friendly - not like at St George and the rooms are so nice - better than St G. They have a policy of low intervention - will not give episiotomy unless absolutely necessary and have a low caesar rate - they dont appear to be slash happy! . I feel so much better having changed to go there now! And im sort of looking forward to my birthing 'room with a view' - yes, they have nice views! And nice big baths!
(I can let you know more after the birth - im due in 4 weeks - unless your SIL is in the same classes as me - we have one class tonight then the last one next monday.)

I had my DD there in Oct 05 and will be delivering there again in Sept.
There antenatal care is fantastic. I have been lucky enough to have the same midwife through both pregnancies. She is the main reason that I am going back.
There maternity ward is lovely. Very new and clean and I was lucky enough to have my own room and bathroom, though without city views LOL.
I can't compare the birthing rooms but they also seemed clean as well. The massive bath was very handy too.
The midwives during my labour were lovely but the main one did her best to ensure that I didn't have an epidural.
From what I understand this time, Sutherland hospital has become a low risk hospital and anyone who is considered high risk for either pregnancy or birthing is referred to St George.
Good luck to your SIL and I hope her experience there is positive.
My cousin nearly died giving birth there but that is an anti-induction story not an anti-Sutherland hospital story.
Could happen anywhere.

hi:wave:
i'm a sahm at present but have worked in kareena private, sutherland and st george hospitals as a nurse. all 3 hospitals have their pros and cons.
overall i'd say sutherland would top my list at present for maternity. st george is the best of the 3 hospitals in my opinion overall but not for maternity. it is a very close 2nd.
kareena i won't go there. all i'll say is i don't recommend it at all.
good lcuk with whichever hospital you choose.:)
Totally illawarramum - ive been to kareena for an operation - the staff scared the u know what out of me and i felt like i was going to die there - i actually left the hospital after my operation so under general i cant remember much - all i know is i couldnt stay. I was supposed to be there for days.
I had my appendix out last year at St G - cant fault the care but the place is grotty and i got staph in there - was very ill. They were thorough in my care though. And a few of the surgeons tried to crack onto me - always a bonus when you feel like your going to explode!:D The postnatal wards are also up to 6 in a room - i couldnt bare that.
Sutherland - feel like i can eat off the floors! It really does seem lovely and the staff are nice. Staff at St G seem too busy (in the antenatal clinic) and their facilities arent as good (birthing/room wise) as Sutherland. They need an upgrade.
This is all good news. My great obs (Dr John Breen) who delivered DS by emergency cs, moved from Nowra to Sutho Hosp and I was wondering whether it is worth the effort of following him all the way up there. I was a bit dubious as I knew nothing about the hospital.
If it is classified as low risk, do you think they would do elective CS? I think I'm going to woos out of attempting a VBAC - the idea of scar rupture scares the hell out of me.
