Am I able to take Nurofen while I'm breastfeeding? I've got the worse period pain and nothing else works better! I haven't taken it in over 2 years because my mum said I couldn't while breastfeeding but now I'm questioning it

So can I? Does anyone know??

No, I was actually looking at this just yesterday regarding panadeine.

ETA: Oops, this one actually says that occasional use is ok.

I know you can't take nurofen PLUS whilst breastfeeding but not sure about the normal nurofen.

You can take Nurofen/Nurofen Plus while breast feeding.

Nurofen Plus is just a mixture of ibuprofen and codeine, both of which are fine.

Yep - given that they give you ibuprofen and panadeine/panadol in hospital right after you've given (vaginal) birth to help with the pain - its fine! If you're worried, speak to a pharmacist, but I have taken both neurophen and neurophen plus whilst breastfeeding, with no ill effects on Claire.

Also, remember that neurofen and pain stop (baby panadeine) are both available for infants - so the drugs can be given directly to babies too.

You can take Nurofen/Nurofen Plus while breast feeding.

Nurofen Plus is just a mixture of ibuprofen and codeine, both of which are fine.

According to the Nurofen website, Nurofen is ok while breastfeeding. Nurofen Plus is NOT ok while breastfeeding.

Can I take Nurofen if I’m pregnant or breastfeeding?

Do not take Nurofen during the first 6 months of pregnancy, except on your doctor’s advice.
Do not take Nurofen at all during the last 3 months of pregnancy.
You can take Nurofen whilst breastfeeding, however do not take Nurofen Plus at all if you are breastfeeding as it contains codeine.

Codeine is moderately safe when breastfeeding:

http://www.kellymom.com/health/meds/aap-approved-meds.html

(Scroll down to 'narcotics').

It's not preferred as it can sedate the baby, and should be used with caution in breastfeeding mothers of very young babies (as their immature livers can't process it as well as the livers of older babies), but in cases where the risk of taking the medication is outweighed by the benefits, it isn't something that should be discounted out of hand.

ETA: Most drug companies are EXTREMELY conservative with their advice re: safety during pregnancy and breastfeeding, for the sole reason that they don't want to be sued in the case of something going wrong - even where there has been adequate studies done on the drug to establish it's safety. That's why it's best to get the information about it's safety from objective sources :)

It's recommended to take every 4 hours & on going.
I wasn't allowed it when I was feeding my 3month old after a car crash

I was ok to take nurofen plus when af returned to worse then it's original b!tchen pain at 7 months.

The chemist always looks at your bub asked how old she was how many feeds I was doing and how heavy she was.

They also asked about my af and how long I took nurofen for.

It really depends on a lot of factors not just a blank yes/no.
