View Full Version : What's wrong with Lucas?

Over the last few months Lucas (19mths) has been taking the skin off the top of his big toe on his right foot. He does this when he's outside or on a hard/coarse surface because he usually doesn't wear shoes - he has very wide feet and I'm finding it difficult buying shoes for him, he does have a pair of sandals & sneakers but he doesn't like wearing them.
He'll be walking/running along and then he'll come to me saying "uh-oh" and his big toe will be bleeding.
The thing that worries me is that it is always the right toe that he scuffs, never the left. I would think that if he was getting tired or wasn't on an even surface that eventually his left toe would suffer the same injury.
Today we were at a playcentre and because his shoes had to come off he did it again...and tonight as he was walking towards me it looked as though his right leg just gave way and he fell over...and this happened twice in a matter of minutes.
Could this be more than just awkwardness/clumsiness, or could it be the sign of something being wrong with his leg or hip?
I'm going to make an appointment at the doctor for Friday and will ask him but I was just wondering if anyone has any suggestions or ideas as to what is causing this.
Thanks
Edited...I just realised I made a spelling boo-boo!!

I wish I could give you some sort of answer but I think taking him to get checked is a good idea.

My DD1 used to kick both her big toes frequently - turns out she was pigeon toed and used to trip over her own feet alot - now that is being rectified we have very few bleeding toe incidences.

I took her to a podiatrist that specialised in kids (on the recommendation of my GP) and he has worked wonders with her stance and toe-in walking. We also made a visit to a chiro/osteo (he does both) just to get her alignment checked to.

Good luck, I hope all is sorted out for you and Lucas soon.

Obviously i havent been through this but i have to keep an eye on bubs due to his daddy's side of the family having dramas & we are currently keeping an eye on the fact he has 2 fat rolls on one bum cheek & 3 on the other.
I would have to say a podiatrist i think would be a really good place to start as it maybe something like a foot problem. Possibly not as bad as something like pigeon toes but say like my eldest sister who rolls her feet really awkwardly so results on problems with her feet.
Anyways i would say your heading in the right direction having it checked out especially as it has been ongoing for some time now.
Hope all goes well, good luck. :D

I also think you've answered your own question simply by voicing it.

As Ally said - I think a podiatrist might be a good place to start, he might have a weakness in his right calf leading to a slight foot drop - this can be caused by a lot of things. This where I stop as my speciality is the upper limb, not the lower limb.

I think your idea about if it was just tiredness or clumsiness that you'd start seeing his left foot go the same way is a pretty good hypothesis - that's how my DS goes - he's clumsy all over, trips over his left foot one day and his right foot another. ;)

Trust your instincts as a mother, it could be nothing, but you'll wonder until you get him checked out.:)

taking him to see the doctor is a very good idea, because even if he cant work out why it is happening then they might be able to reccomend someone who can.

I myself and pigieon toed and atm i am keeping a close eye on my youngest (4.5 mthns) as his right ankel rolls inwards and it look quite likley that he will be pigieon toed to(*Kicks Self*)

Is there any family history of leg problems because that could also give you an indication as to why it is happening

Hi girls,
Took Lucas to the docs on Friday. His toe is infected and he's on antibiotics 4 times a day. The doctor agreed that it is odd that only the one toe on the same foot keeps getting injured. I took his shoes off and the doctor and I watched him walk...we both did notice that he seems to 'flick' out his right foot when he walks, it's something I haven't noticed before but it was barely noticeable.
The doc checked his hips and couldn't feel anything unusual but I'm taking Lucas back in a week so his toe can be checked and then the doctor will refer him for an ultrasound and an xray and if anything's wrong then Lucas will be sent to the orthapedic specialists at the childrens. So we'll wait and see...thanks everyone for your replies and DH did mention that he saw you the other day Nell...he was going up the shops...DH and Lucas - both walkers IYKWIM!!! My mum saw Tam and the boys up there today...we can't get away from you Tasmanians!!!:p

Nelly75...I told mum it was you, she said, "oh, I thought she looked different!"
I said, " Tam's kids don't look anything like Janelles"
She said that because they were wearing floppy hats she really couldn't see who was under them.
She was in such a tizzy that the Reject shop would close and Jesse wouldn't get the sword that Fletcher a.k.a Harry had!:D
