View Full Version : Morning After Pill.... could still be preg?
HI all, it's my first time here... just found you by Googling. I had a bit of a 'Whoops' moment with hubby recently and within 9 hours took a morning after pill. A couple of days later my boobs started being extremely sore, and my nipples painfully sensitive (it's been 10 days of this now!) and now I notice the little bumps on my areolas are quite visible, plus I've had a lot more CM than is normal for me over the last few days. I'm absolutely petrified that the pill might have failed! It's too early to test for preg yet... I need to wait another week when AF is due, but I guess I just wanted to see whether anyone else had similar symptoms and NOT been preg. Like, maybe a result of the morning after pill. I haven't had any contraceptives for years now so thought maybe the huge dose of hormones from it might be causing my symptoms. Can anyone ease my mind?

Yeah...it is a HUGE dose of synthetic hormones in those pills. The morning after pill could very easily produce these symptoms. I have had all these symptoms lots of times and NOT been pregnant, its not surprising that you are experiencing them. You will probably find that AF arrives fairly soon:)
If you are pregnant, obviously its a baby that really wanted to be here LOL!!
Good luck with it!
I'll feel much better when AF arrives and I can relax again. I have never ever had sore boobs for anymore than 2 days before it's due so this is very unusual for me. *fingers crossed*.

Its more than likely your body just playing tricks but there is a slim chance you could be pg.
My best advice is that if you dont get AF in the coming week or so as expected then head to the doctors for a check.
I hope all turns out well for you whichever way you are hoping :)
Well after a very restless night of AF-type cramping, heartburn and peeing.. it's beginning to look like I might be in that unlucky 1% for whom the pill failed. How soon can you test? It's only been 14days since the 'deed', but the suspense is killing me! Usually when I get AF cramping it arrives promptly the next morning... but there's still not even the slightest sign of it, and it's not due for a couple of days yet.

Try to relax (I know, it's easy for me to say). You are obviously very stressed about the matter which probably isn't helping AF come along....
Give yourself a few days - AF could have been affected by the hormones as well, just like the normal contraceptive pill would have an effect - except the morning after pill is an incredibly high dosage.
If your AF is due, there are some pregnancy tests that you can try - that pick any pregnancy up quite early.
The heartburn and peeing etc could easily be caused by your stress - I never had any of these symptoms until I was about 5-6 months pregnant.
I hope all goes well for you.
Well.... I bought one of the Fortel early detection tests.... and just tried it now (couldn't wait til the morning) and I got the faintest of lines... almost enough to make me hope it's wrong... but a line nonetheless. Oh dear. :-( Will have another go first thing tomorrow to see if the line is darker or perhaps not there at all... but it's not looking hopeful. *sobs*

Well....congratulations??:o
Commiserations more like it. :-( HUbby and I are not enjoying the best of relationships right now and we already have a very challenging 7 year old. THis is the last thing we wanted. *sigh* Well... will confirm with another test in the morning, and if it still looks positive, we have some serious talking to do.
I'm still reeling.... neither of us are particularly fertile, and I took the pill within 9 hours... so the odds of all that producing a pregnancy were incredibly low. Oh well.... as someone said... this is one baby that REALLY wanted to be here.
Hi there I know how you feel went through exactly same situation including bad timing with the relationship:( Alas I was in the 1% I ended up going to the doctor and having a blood test which came back positive. That was on a friday so spent all weekend coming to terms with the fact that we were pregnant. On the monday I began spotting, this proceeded to get heavier resulting in a full period back to the doctor another blood test and I had lost the baby, sometimes I wish I wasn't so in tune with my body the Doctor said most people wouldn't of even known. I often wonder if it was the pill kicking in or if I would have lost the baby anyway. Anyrate fingers crossed goodluck no matter the outcome take care of yourself.

hi Just wondering how you went?
How are you handling it?
Oh it just gets more confusing! Went to the doc today and he said I have a UTI (which I never even noticed!) so he's made the blood test an urgent rush and results were supposed to be in this arvo, but never turned up... so now I have to wait the weekend before I find out for sure. I can't get the UTI treated until I know, cause apparently the treatment isn't OK if you're preg?
Plus, now I've had some light spotting, so wonder if it's just a really light period? I never get spotting normally... on my first day it usually REALLY announces itself. So.... being my impatient self, I'm off to get another early testing kit from the checmist tomorrow to see if the very faint line has got any darker.... *sigh*
The funny thing is that when I told the doc I'd had the morning after pill he laughed and said that it was useless and did nothing! Now *that's* comforting... NOT!

Oh wow, well hope everything works out ok.
Any new news today?
The doc rang me first thing Saturday morning with the wonderful news that the blood test was a BNF! So we spent the weekend celebrating with a nice family outing, and I actually got some quality sleep.
BUT....
Having decided that the faint blue line on BOTH the early detection home tests was obviously to faint to have been a real line, we decided for a laugh to have hubby pee on a stick (the second test from the same box) so we could joke about HIM being preg (he hasn't had a period in AGES! :;) ) and...... I can now see that there is definitely NO line on his.... faint or otherwise!
So I'm back to stressing out and wondering what the hell is going on, and wondering if it's possible an early pee test can pick it up when a blood test didn't. By my calcs, if I was pg I'd be only 17 days pg (14 when blood test was done).
The doc has asked to see me on Friday to get my UTI treated and he'll do another pg test ten just to be sure... so I have to worry for another whole week now.
AAARRRRRRRRRGGGHHHHHH!!!!

Hmmm there is a threshold for the blood tests so it is possible but its also possible that your HPT had a false positive too!
Well maybe wait until your AF is due and see how you go, or on friday at the docs.:)
Good luck, hope it works out well for you!
How stressful!
I wonder if it could be leftover hormones from the Morning after pill making the test a false positive.
I used Fortel Early Detection test and it picked up a 7 day old pregnancy ie i tested 1 week before AF was due. It was very faint tho,had to hold it up to a light bulb to see it lol ahhh the things we do :D
I would say if a blood test comes up negative then you would not be pregnant.
Hope you have a happy ending so you can relax!
Take care, Jen.
I used the fortel one too... and saw a line both times. AF is now due... and I've had spotting for a few days but nothing heavy enough to feel like AF. I'm going to be an ostrich for the week - stick my head firmly in the sand and pretend the blood test was correct until I get definite confirmation on Friday. *sigh*
Thanks guys for your comments.... it helps to have someone to process this with other than hubby. :)
What ever happens, I hope things work out for you. Sometimes things occur that we do not understand nor want, however, the pieces of the puzzle fit later on. If you are pregnant, this little person desperately needs to come into the world and has chosen you as his/her spirit leader aka Mummy. As I don't know your personal circumstances, I can just say things have a way of working themselves out for the best, no matter what and please keep us in the loop, we are all supporting you:)

I'm late to this thread but can I just say that the morning after pill has a whopping failure rate! ( I have a morning after pill babe :D ) it's only about 70% effective. We didn't want to get preg until after our honeymoon but I'd gone off the pill to get "back to normal". And thus I conceived my first darling daughter :D Lucky for us it was a happy accident, but to anyone who thinks it's a safe contraceptive option- use it if you really need to, but my advice it to go and buy condoms, no matter what time of night ;)

We did use condoms.... but hubby is...er..... skinny.... and we had some slippage at the wrong moment. *blush*
I'm still getting a very light AF... 5 days now which is lnger than usual.... and tonight have nasty cramps and nausea. If it hasn't eased my morning I'll have to make an earlier appt I think. Have told hubby WE ARE NEVER HAVING SEX AGAIN!!!! LOL
Hi Keara,
This is a question on a different topic, I noticed that you have 3 children, and are studying naturopathy part time. I would love to do that also but I felt it was going to be impossible to start until my youngest was atleast in day care a few days. Can u give me some advice on how you manage the two and still stay sane!!.
Thanks, Heidi

PS Sorry girls for cutting in on the conversation here, Rikred, we are all busting to hear how you went????????
Well I had my appt with the GP yesterday and got the good news that the UTI has resolved itself, and a follow up preg test was a BFN. He thinks it's probable that I was very briefly preg (which would explain the positive home test) but that the pill kicked in late, so rather than being a contraceptive, it worked as an abortive. Surprisingly, the thought upset me a little, but I suppose a spontaneous loss is better than an unwanted preg, and I'm just relieved that after a couple of weeks of high stress I can finally relax again.
The doc sent me home with a pamphlett about Vasectomies for hubby! Poor bugger is worried about flashing his bits to doctors and nurses, so I reminded him about the birth of our daughter and being on all fours bearing my butt (among other things) to the world! LOL He's now "thinking about it". *grin*
Thanks everyone for your support and advice... you have a wonderful community on here!
