View Full Version : your age for first c section

hi im just interested what age you were for your first c section. I have absolutely no proof but to me it seems like younger girls are having them a fair bit.

one of my friends had just turned 16 when her DS was born, and they didnt even really give her the option of a VB, she had a few hours of labour then they told her 'it could go for another 30 hours' and gave her a c sect instead.....(which irks me as i think she should at least have had the chance to try and see what happened)

i have heard of this a bit on BH too im starting to think its being done because the girls were young....

as i said, just a random theory of mine, but there are almost 22,000 members on here so hopefully will get some decent input.

i will put a poll too.

Funny that you say that i have found that c sections are alot more common i know a girl who is 22 now her first bubs was at 18 and she had a csection. 4 hours into labour mind you so didnt even give her a chance to have it naturally.

My mum had 6 kids aged from 38 to 16 her last bubs she was told to have a c section, even though she had the others all naturally apparently coz of her age it was recommended

Maybe its more common now with technology etc medically wise but i do think after reading some posts that some werent given a chance :)

yes thats very true. how do they check for CPD? apparently my mum never had a chance for VB going by the size of her pelvis(yet it must not be hereditary lol)

i had a vb with my first, and he caused havic on my v jay jay so i decided to have an elective with my 2nd. My ob didn't pressure me or anything, it was totally my decision and he supported it. I don't regret it either.

I have noticed alot of young girls are having c/sections too. Hmmm....

My Ob did an internal exam and my pelvis is unusually shaped and unusually small...rare but obviously it happens. I knew this from day one of my ob visits. I could either go through a very difficult labour and end up with an emergency c/s or just go elective. I chose elective. And as I reached 39 weeks, DD hadn't even engaged or anything so his diagnoses was correct, so we went ahead with the c/s. Some women don't get diagnosed until after they have attempted a vb. It's apparently not hereditary since my mother had 6 children all by natural vaginal births.

I feel that if you're unsure of your current ob's diagnosis for a c/s.. always seek the advice of another professional. I did and it was the same diagnosis. I wouldn't change anything for the world. My decision was made on the best advice and the best option at the time. I don't think it matters on your age just as long as it's an informed decision.

I thought alot of older women were being given c-sections, but maybe it's just on the rise, in general. I was 31 when I had my c-section, but tried to have a VB for 19 hours. I was only 3cms after 19 hours  , and they thought the rate I was going I could have been there another 19  so they gave me a c-section cause my blood pressure was starting to rise.

Keep in mind that you will have to take your poll results with a grain of salt.

Yes, it's likely to show that "more" young women have had c/sections... but that's going to be skewed by the fact that more women of that have have given birth, by either method, period. The greater the number of births, the greater the number of c/s.

To get a more accurate picture you would have to find out the c/s vs vb rates of each age group and compare the ratios to see if a disproportionately large group of younger women were birthing via c/s.

I was 20 for my first c-section. It was an emergancy c-section I had tried for a vaginal birth and was in labour for 23 hrs. I was also 10 days over due and even though i went into labour on my own it wasnt progressing enough and DS heart rate rose to 210 BPM. So it was very nessessary.

I am electing a c-section with this baby. I will be 22.

thats really sad that those girls werent given a chance to have vb, having a c section terified me all through my pregnancy, i was in labour [strong regular contractions, not just fluffing lol] for 3 days and im so grateful that i was able to have a vb and that bub stayed calm through the birth...

my aunty had an mergency c section because her pelvis was waywaywayway too small, bubs nearly died, i think thats prob why they freak me out, it was the only birth i ever saw

I am the same as Kita. I was terrified of a vb and was so very thankfull when I had to have a c-sect. Dont get me wrong i would have def given vb a go if it was possible. I was 25 when i had bubs via c-sect. We left him as long as we could (40 weeks) and he wasnt engaged. I mean to the poiont he wasnt even in my pelvis they could literally move him up and down. The ob said afterwards that we def made the right choice as he would have been in there at least another 2 weeks and he was already to big to fit. His head was a whopper 37.5cm  3.884kg and 55cm. He was comfy and not going nowhere. No regrets on my side.

Hi, I had

#1. Emergency c-section after 15 hrs labour, at 18 years of age.

#2. Emergency c-section after 18hrs labour, at 23 years of age

#3. Elective c-section @ 26 years of age.

#4. Obviously have to have another c-section will be 38 years old.

I was 21 when I had my emergency c-section after 15hours of induced labour, DD turned posterior , brow presentation and wedged her head on an angle in my pelvis

The statistic we got in my ante-natal class for c-sections was 1 in 10 women. In my opinion, that statistic is far too high.

I had a vb with my first. Then I had the twins, I had a vb with twin#1, but twin#2 would not turn and was unable to be delivered breech as they could not grab her, so I had no choice but to have a C-Section. I am definately planning on a vb for this bub, the thought of being cut open makes me feel so sick, even though I have been through it and lived to tell the tale......LOL

Is that for that hospital? If so that's actually very low in comparison. The average rate of c/s in Aust now is around 30% public, and 40+% in private hospitals. The WHO recommends a c/s rate of 15%. Big difference

i was 22 when i had c-section. I was very big and was told my baby would be "a good size", when i asked if that ment BIG, doc looked at me and said, well its not small!! der i already knew that!! lol
I was 41 weeks preg when i took my mother (who had 3 c-sections due to small tilted pelvis) and she asked when would i be induced and chances that i too would need c-section, for the first time at 41 wks preg, he said "ill be honest there is a high chance u will need c-section" FINALLY a doc who was honest and gave a damn!! So he got me into hospital that night, where i was induced, labour started 2 hours later (although i didnt really think it was labour, because it was all in my back) I sat in the shower almost all night, nurse gave me "sleeping tabs" because as she said" you have a big ahead of you" this was at about 11pm.
Next morning i was in much pain, still in my back. After about 12 hours labour, i felt like i was being stabbed in the back, i was offered a epi, which i gladly took, aaarrhhhh relief, spent all day lying in bed, had a heart moniter put onto bubs head via vagina, had a doc tell me things were going well, midwife got me to take bra off and get into gown because she thought it wiuld be c-section, was fully dialated and told to push, tried for a while although i couldnt feel anything, 1st doc came back again saying how well everything was when a 2nd doc came in said "im not happy with bubs heart we're going for emergency c-section now"
i cried and cried all the way to theater, cries of failure and cries of being scared.
At 4:10pm they pulled out my 9lb4 baby girl.
Now i want another baby, but i will trying my hardest to have an elective c-section, i dont care what anyone says, i went thru hell and i will not be going thru that again.

Do you know, I was talking to a teacher at work today how I want to go as natural as I can with my VBAC and she said she will prob just have elective CS, saying she was too posh to push so to say and was laughing it off. I said to her to really do her research as it's not actually too good for bubs to just have one, you really should only have in medical emergency blah, blah... she goes "I thought it was better for bub to have a CS"

22. Emergency cesarean for fetal distress. I have CPD as well. And Whaddaya know? I had a vaginal birth last year, with a bigger baby! :smiliedance: CPD is very overdiagnosed and it is nearly impossible to 'test' for it. The only true measure of a pelvis is the baby you are carrying.

I had an emergency c-section for my first at 23 and it was due to failure to progress(dilate) 12 hours after i was induced and i ended up with a child with disabilities.

My story:

http://www.bubhub.com.au/community/f...hlight=special

Now at 17 months he still does not walk, crawl, talk or do anything he is suppose to at his age other than laugh, giggle and babble. He has pretty much no expressive sense does not kiss or cuddle or show love.Doctors have classed him as cerebral palsy only due to the fact he cannot use his muscles.

At the moment all growth factors are in the 3rd 4th percentile and his cognitive scale is at approx less than one month, receptive language is at approx 2-3 months, expressive language at approx 6 months and fine and gross motor is at approx 1-2 months of age.

It was an emergency classical c-section (inverted T incision...horizontal bikini and vetical)
Because I had a classical I had no choice to have my 7th via c-section also...it ended up as another emergency c-section at 25 weeks.

Like some of the PP mine was also medically necessary. I was 17 and induced, after 8 hours the c-section was given.

However, the OB wanted to try forceps (I was only 6cm dilated!) but my mum who was the manager of another ward at the time stepped in and stopped it. She's also an ex-midwife. She took the OB out of the room and tore him a new one, actually (was funny after the fact). She basically said I'd cope better with a 10cm wound across my stomach than a 1cm wound 'down there' not to mention damage from the forceps with me not being ready to birth and baby not even being engaged.

I was glad she was there to advocate for me, and I was fine with the caesar - I do believe when they told me, I said 'yay' (they kept turning my drip up up up the whole time and it was horrible and constant pain)

25 and had first bubs this year - he was breech with cord around his neck 3 times. Obs was worried we were going to lose him - gave me choice of having c sect then and there basically (at 36 weeks) or waiting to have baby naturally at full term and risking him being stillborn. My choice is obvious and was completely right for my situation - recovery was speedy but if all goes to plan for next bubs I will be having a natural birth :)

Wow - this is an old thread lol.

I was 29- our daughter was breech with her head jammed under my ribs- no way she was turning around and she was bumb down. Recovery wasn't too bad at all with pain meds overlapping :)

2 days before my 17th after being induced and having very strong and close together contractions for 12 hours they realized she was brow presentation and most likely wouldn't come anytime soon, they were discussing what to do when @ 12.5hrs they lost her heartbeat due to distress and rushed me off for an emergency C section. Best thing they could have done for bub and me but worst ever experience of my life, I had very bad PND due to not being able to see my baby girl for 2 days, she ended up being perfectly fine just her head a little out of shape and swollen for a few days but it took me a couple of days to be fully awake as I had reactions to it all

I was 22 when I had an elective c section with ds. I had dd vaginally but she caused all sorts of problems coming out so my perenium is all scar tissue so my ob at the time recommended a c section for subsequent babies.

Edited to fix spelling, silly auto correct :o

I had my first at 24 after being in labour for 38 hours and only making it to 3.5cm. I was on the drip for 12 hours of that. They gave me the option of a VBAC for #2 and I thought hard about it but was to scared of going through what I did again. I decided if I went into labour early so bub was smaller I would try but I didn't. #3 I had no option they wouldn't let me try for a VBAC.

I had an emergency c-section when I was 24. Fully dilated ready to push but because I have a couple of blood conditions and not sure if my son had them, they couldn't use forceps or vacuum on him so I went straight to theatre for the c-section.

I will be having an elective s-cation in September.

21 & induced with an undiagnosed breech followed by a csection.

I wonder if my age played a roll in that I didn't have friends having babies to talk to and compare and know anything more than I was being told by the stupid morons at hospital who didn't care about me and my baby. :)

Had I known prior to hour 45 of an inducement that he was breech and if I had the support network I have now I'd have attempted to deliver him naturally.

But with what I know now and who I have had "in my corner" at 24 I had princess Katelyn naturally 4 months ago.

I'm 24 later this month, first baby is due in October and I will be having an elective c section due to mental and emotional health factors so it was my decision supported my the midwives, social worker, obstetrician and GP.

I had an emergency c-section 3 days before my 24th b'day. Was induced, ds went into distress, turns out there was a knot in the cord.

I was 23yo when I had me first c-section. Hopefully bub#2 (born after my 25th bday) will be a VBAC but we have to wait to see what my medical files say. The doctors might suggest another c-sec. Will find out at next antenatal appointment next month.

I was 22. I had a caesarean because ds1 has got Spina Bifida and we with the advice from a paediatrician and midwife decided it would be best to have a c/s to reduce too much trauma to his back and spine. I went on to have 2 VBACs.

I don't regret my c/s because it felt like the best option for us.

I was 18 when I had my first c section
Due to 'failure to progress' and bubs heartbeat dropping with each contraction - turned out the cord was wrapped around her neck twice so was the best thing for it in the end!!!

I was 19 when I had my 1st c-sect, 20 when I had my 2nd and 23 when I had my 3rd, I think being young has certainly allowed me to bounce back alot easier.
