View Full Version : Rent Question: what percentage of your income is spent on rent?
I hope this is in the right section, mods feel free to move if its not.
I was wondering what sort of rent people pay as a percentage of their family income?
Would love to hear any comments about what people feel in regards to renting homes.
Cheers!
M.
ETA: Mods: I meant to post a poll with this thread but I think its too late now??

we were paying approx 30% on rent now we own our house and our repayments are approx 18% :)
Rent is shocking how it has gone up so muc lately
We pay about 10% of our income in rent each year - we pay almost the same amount in daycare!
Happy with the rent amount, it allows us to save and still live comfortably.

we pay just over 1/3 of our income on rent...i am a SAHM tho and DP works...
I would say that we pay around 20% of DP's income on rent. Our rent is $200 per wk & as from nxt wk we will be getting $85 per fortnight rent assistance from centrelink, so that will make a big difference.
i am renting my fathers house, because i can rent it at an affordable price. to rent a three bedroom house around here would cost me easily 50% (or more)of my (centrelink) income per fortnight. ( houses costing about $300.00 dollars per week)
and i just can't afford that:no:

I pay around 70% of my "income" on rent :( I live in a nice apartment and didn't know I was going to be a single parent on centrelink when we moved here. The lease is up soon and I've been looking around and I can't find anything in this area that is much cheaper. I need to live in this area because it's where my family is and I need them (mum and brother). So I guess I just keep paying it for now, until I either find somewhere cheaper or go back to work.

Poll added.
I'm not sure how much is spent now on our joint income, but I'm budgetting for around 25% of my after tax income when I move out on my own with DD.
Our rent is $600/week, but DH's work pays 2/3's of that, so our share after tax it's just under 20% (I don't think i've made any sense... :D )

We have a mortgage, but it costs us about 25% of our weekly income currently. Not too bad at all if you ask me.

How do you do this?
I have just been approved for rental.
For the first 6 months I will be spending 25% on rent and 28% on daycare fees. This will be luxury compared to when my sis is due to move out.
Than I will be spending 50% on rent and 28% on daycare fees at which point I've decided that I will have to get a full time job and do my study through correspondence!
All this so I can move out of my very crazy parents home and raise my son in a not-so-bad area (but not the best!!!)
 :o
Ours is mortgage repayments, but I still thought I'd contribute. We're somewhere over 50% of our joint income is for mortgage repayments, but that said, I no longer work so my income is centrelink and DH doesn't earn much atm. He earnt about 4 times this much before being self employed so when he's back up to earning what he used to, it'll be something like 20-25%.
Ok, I've rambled and aren't making any sense anymore!
