I just thought I'd share a couple of snippets from a form I just had to sign at the hospy for my VBAC.
It lists some risks etc but here are a couple I found amusing for one reason or another:

"If I choose VBAC and have to have a caesarean section during labour, I will have greater risk of problems than if I had originally chosen an elective repeat caesarean section"

"In most cases if an urgent ceasarean section is needed, there will be no ill effects to my baby, or me, but there is a risk urgent surgery may increase blood loss and I may need a blood transfusion. Rarely, my womb may have to be removed to control the blood loss"

Also, at the top of the article it says this:

VBAC means attempting to give birth to a baby vaginally despite the presence of a scar on the lower, no-contracting part of the womb from an earlier caesarean section. This is a personal choice. You can choose a further elective caesarean section, but in most women, a VBAC carries a lower overall risk than a repeat caesarean section.

Hows that last sentence for ya! The Dr's admitting on paper, a supposedly legal contract, that VBAC has less overall risk......quite opposite to what they actually say to your face!

So they try to scare the **** out of you and then say at the end that you've actually chosen the safer option

It sounds like you can see it for what it is - ie. covering their own backsides - but it makes you feel sorry for those women who aren't so confident in their decision and would be totally freaked out by those clauses!

All the best for your birth and I hope everything goes perfectly :)

Woohoo that's great :smiliedance:

Is this sort of thing standard in hospitals? I didn't have to sign anything when going for my VBAC?

I'm not sure? He just pulled it out and said, " Oh, before I forget heres a form the lawyers like us to get you to sign" and we skimmed through it together and I signed, I figure it doesn't mean alot cos if I change my mind on anything I will just sign another form anyway and it will void that one etc....

I agree with you too Emmylou, How many other people have gone in asking for it, then got shown that and said "Oh, maybe I'll just book the CS".

Here's another passage it says:

"Emergency complications can happen so quickly during any labour that the medical team may not have enough time to intervene to prevent death and/or injury to my baby and/or me. These emergency conditions can occur not only in trials of labour such as this, but also in any normal vaginal delivery"

My DH freaked when he read the prevent death bit, and I was like, hang on let me see that....then I read further and said "yeah silly, it says but also any normal vaginal delivery"
