I thought a few members might be interested in this;

When your screen is white - an empty word page, or the Google page, your computer consumes 74 watts, and when its black it consumes only 59 watts. Mark Ontkush wrote an article about the energy saving that would be achieved if Google had a black screen, taking in account the huge number of page views, according to his calculations, 750 mega watts/hour per year would be saved.

In a response to this article Google created a black version of its search engine, called Blackle, with the exact same functions as the white version, but with a lower energy consumption, check it out.

Use this site as your search engine and do your bit for the planet

check out the tools section, go down to internet options. There should be a tab where you can set your home page!

i find this very interesting and have started an email to get people to also change there pages!

Sounds great so decided to check it out a bit further and after a bit of research I found that you will save wattage but only if you are using old CRT monitors so if you have an LCD screen then it makes no difference.

"significant energy savings will only be for CRT monitors which are falling out of favor in the pc market. few current-generation LCD monitors support localized dimming so they use virtually the same amount of power regardless of the color displayed. still though, it's nice to see google provide a simple change to their service that helps save energy"

For those who find the light text on black background too difficult to read, there is Greygle (http://www.greygle.com/). It uses a grey backgound with dark text that some might find easier to read. Also they have an Australian focus site at au.greygle.com (http://au.greygle.com).
