Ds has just gotten out of hospital again,2 weeks ago i was told that he had bronchiolitis. This time when he got it,i made sure they looked into it further because this is the 3rd time in 8 weeks that he has had it.

They done a test to see if he had a virus, but there was no virus.

They had him on oxygen, and monitor and ventolin and proventer all night,he has made a big improvement but is still wheezing a bit.

At first the docs said they wont give him anything for it(talk about torture the poor boy) but i said whats the harm in trying? So they tried ventolin and proventer and wallah he had no weez and was running around like normal.I knew that he had athsma but they didn't believe me.Me and his dad had it when we were young too.

He is now on ventolin every 4 hrs.Hes not on a proventer yet,but if he gets it again he probably will be.

He has a follow up appointment in 4 weeks. And i have to make an appt with my doc.

So my question,is there anyone else whose 1 yr old has been diagnosed with athsma?

Is there anything i need to know?

Cheers

I have no first-hand experience, but my nephew had asthma from a very young age. He had to have ventolin (which as you know is hard to administer to a baby - you need to use that full face mask).

My nephew outgrew it, and now he's six and healthy as a horse.

Hi Heaven Sent,

My daughter was diagnosed at age 2 and we're still getting the medication right. She has reactive asthma which means she has a constant cough rather than a wheeze or asthma attacks as such.

We had her on Flixotide twice a day (a preventor) and Ventolin occasionally when her coughing was bad and this worked for a couple of months. But lately she has started coughing again so we're back to the drawing board!

Her doctor has now prescribed a once a day tablet called Singulair and is slowly weaning her off Flixotide so we'll see how this goes. Singulair apparently works beautifully in some kids and not at all in other kids. It's a cherry flavoured chewable tablet which my DD doesn't mind taking, thank God!

I seem to practically live at the doctor's trying to get her medication right so I think you're doing the right thing by insisting on something being done. It will probably take a lot of trial and error to get it right so just be persistent and patient. You know your DS best so don't be afraid to be a b***h!

Best of luck!

Yes we do! Our son is nearly 18months now but was diagnosed with asthma after a severe asthma attack at 14months. He spent a few days in hospital sorting it out. He has had a few episodes since but they have been easily controlled by using ventolin.

Its really scary isnt it. Our DS had bronchiolitis countless times as a baby (under 1year) and me and DH always said there was something not right with his breathing, that was pretty much from birth onwards.

Hopefully now that you have ventolin to use it will improve your DS asthma and get easier to manage. :fingerscrossed: Good luck.

Oh yeah, the cold wind seems to set Codys asthma off and beware of any smoke - not just peoples cigarettes - as we went to a show that had a fire burning and that set him off too! Glad your DS is improving.:)

You can PM me anytime if you are worried or wanna talk.

Hi,

My 14month old was diagnosed with Asthma last Friday after having about 5-6 chest infections and bronchialitis since she was 5months old. Loads of hospital and doctor visits confirmed what my husband has said quite a few times he thought it was asthma and yep it turned out it is.

Hannah is on Ventolin every 4 hours at the moment also, although we did have a doctors appointment yesterday and she has reduced it to twice a day for the next 2 weeks. Her wheeze was so bad last week and she seemed to be gasping but this week she is a different child (thanks to the ventolin me thinks)

If you would like to chat further pm me anytime. As awful as asthma is it is nice to know we are not the only one's.

Hi Heaven Sent:wave:

My son had this problem and was diagnosed with asthma just before he turned 1 but they wouldn't 'officially' call it asthma because he was under 2. I found I got stuffed around more than anything and different Dr's would tell me different things including that he didn't have asthma and no wheeze was present.

I had a asthma treatment plan put in place but when I had it checked by another Dr it was found that it wouldn't work because the medicines were round the wrong way.

Medications my son has been on include normal ventolin, intal forte, flixotide and seretide and also oral steroids. The best thing ever has been seretide which is a combination preventer and a long lasting type of ventolin. He hasn't had any big attacks since being on it.

In an emergency if your son is having real problems breathing you can give him 6 puffs of ventolin every 15 minutes until you get him to the hospital. We also have a bottle of redipred in the fridge in case of a major attack.

The best advice I can give is to find a respiratory paediatrition if you are in a major city. I drive to Sydney to see the one for my son because he sorted his asthma out and has since kept it under control. I rang the asthma foundation and they wouldn't give me any information because my son was under 2

Sorry that was long, feel free to PM if you want to chat.

:hugs:

Aiden was diagnosed with asthma when he was 12 months old... He had had a heavy wheeze for months but they don't like to diagnose in under 1's. Anyway we got a spacer type mask thing to help give him his ventolin from Greg's discount chemist. It has been brilliant. Makes taking his ventolin fun for him.

Make sure you give him lots to drink after he takes his med as well so he doesn't develop thrush in his mouth. I have found Aiden's get worse in winter when he is sick as well but seems to come better again in the summer.

I noticed when Sasha was born every time he got sick he would wheeze i took him to the doctors numerous times and they said it was just an upper respiratory infection and not to worry.

I have known along that something wasn't quite right,im so lucky i spoke up about it.But i wasn't about to put my son through this again and not have any treatment.

He is much better today, cant hear any wheezing so fingers crossed that he continues to get better.

i just went to paed yesterday cos my son has had this wheeze everytime he gets a cold, about 5 trips to the hospital in 8 months and has been on ventolin, prednisone, and a few others. They say cant diagnose as asthma etc as he is to young. They give me the option of trying the preventer if I thought it was bad enough, but wasnt wanting to unless I felt it was. So basically he will take his ventolin as needed when he has the wheeze and to monitor the length of time, hospital and dr visits and next year go back when he is 2 and see how things are. It is soo frustrating not knowing etc.

Good luck with things

DD has asthma tho some doc refuse to diagnose it as asthma and some do:confused: i dont get that!?

She too has reactive asthma... since she was first hospitalised at 9mths with bronciolitis.. shes had about 2-4 serious ED visits a yr with it. We have been told by some docs to use preventers some tell us to use ventolin, some give her prednisone.. i wish they would all give the same prognosis..

Im currently looking for a decent asthma specialist to get DD looked at as its not getting any better as she gets older.

I find the nebusliser alot better than the puffers also, if shes really chesty up i stick some saline in with the ventolin also. It helps lossen the congestion in her chest.

My son was diagnosed at 7 months. Had real problems getting it diagnosed and ended up demanding a referal to the childrens hospital. So far so good. We use ventolin twice a day and a preventer. I am yet to have much luck finding the right preventer for him as they don't want to give him a steriod based preventer at such a young age. I tend to agree with them. We started on Intel Forte which its only side effect can be a sore throat.

Don't have any real issues with giving the spacer. Maybe because he was so young when he started. He just lays on the floor and we count to twelve giving puffs at 2 and 4. When he is not well we find steam is very beneficial and we use eucalptus in a vapouriser.
Getting them diagnosed is more than half the battle

the dr's keep saying the my daughter has asthma, when she is sick she wheeze's badly, ends up on oxygen & has a persistent cough but ventolin does not help her at all. She is now on a preventative to see whether we can stop her from getting the cough & to help her breathing but it doesnt seem to be doing anything. We always have redipred for her but that takes 6-8hrs to work anyway & we have ventolin but it doesnt help, yet the dr's say she has asthma even when they know that the ventolin & other asthma medications & preventatives arent working. We are really confused about it & wish we could somehow get a proper diagnosis & help her in some way.
