I'm not sure if I am posting in the right section here.

I have a few questions.

I am just wondering if people know what their baby's blood type is?

When did you find out? Was it in the hospital when they were born or did you find out from blood test after that?

Also, how is their blood group determined? Does it come from the parents? Is there a dominant type?

I am just wondering because, I was never told what Ava's blood type is & it is not in her child health record book. My blood type is A+ & hubby's in B-. My mum mentioned that Ava may have one of those rare blood types like AB- as a result. Is this possible?

Cheers!

I really wish I could remember human biol class, but unfortunately I was better at English and slacking off!!

I wish I knew how it all worked. Layla never got tested either. I only found out what I was when I got pregnant. I always thought they told you when bubs was born.

Maybe I can ask my sister. She knows all that sort of stuff.

I will let you know once I find out! :p

This has a blood type "calculator" on it which may help.

p.s. I am up late and bored! Haha! Poor Layla is teething and not sleeping too well tonight :(

Ok well its usually only know if they do the test for it like in my case as im Rh O negative & my partner is Rh O positive which could mean problems for my future pregnancies so i have to have anti-d shots through pregnancy as well as when i have the baby they test to see as it could be either. So i now know bubs is Rh O positive as he had to be tested so i could have the shot of anti-d if he was positive which i did.
Now with yours its hard to say what bubs is as there are dominant lines etc with A & B as it depends on what your markers are as well as your hubby's. Yes she could have an AB blood type again it all depends on what your markers are so there is no real way of knowing without a blood test.
Hope this was helpful even if i cant really answer it. :)

According to the blood type calculator, Ava could have A, B, O or AB blood.

Really doesn't tell you a lot does it? :p

Thanks for that, Brooke!

I have no excuse for being up late! Just not tired!

Thanks Allyoo,

It all sounds very confusing! I would like to know what blood type she is, but I don't wish for her to have go through the needle taking blood thing to find out, unless she has to.

Fat lot of good that calculator was! I guess there is more to it than being able to "calculate" over the net.

It's all too confusing.

I know this is totally off subject, but there is a really bad "horror" on at the moment called "Cut". Terrible. I should turn it off. I might end up laughing myself to sleep!@

Well the calculator told me what i had already thought that me being O+ and my BF being A+ that EJ will be either A or O and since we both positive she has to be that (unless you can throw back a generation on a rhesus factor (my mum was o-) ?)

Cathryn- your bub could still be a neg! As two positives can make a neg- have a one in 4 chance of that happening!

The reason being -neg is a recessive gene- so it is not dominant so both your husband and you could have - and a +, andbecause the + out weighs the - you are a pos but bub could get both of the -'s so the two -'s will form a neg!! IYKWIM

(I remember that from science! It is the same as two brown eye'd people can make a blue eyed baby as the blue ene is also recessive!!!)

Like allyoo, I am RH O-, so I found out that DS is RH- at birth (yeah, no injection)... but I am not sure of his blood group (ie A, B, O)... Also don't know what DH is...

I thought it was something that was automatically given to you when bubs was born but its not the case..

To find out your bubs blood type all you need to do is ring the hospital where bubs was born. Ask for the Medical records officer.

They have it on record there from when they were born so you don't have to have another blood test.

I just did it the other day and found out straight away.

jasminesmum, thanks for that! I will call the hospital & see if they can tell me.

I wonder why the don't put it in the record book for us if they have it on record at the hospital?

Avas Mum

Don't be to worried about blood types. Before any blood transfusion and test is take for a group & hold then a crossmatch if needed. The crossmatch is needed to test for any antibodies and to make sure that the neg/pos factor is correct - which is really important for girls as there can issues within a future pregnancy. In an emergency situation type O blood is always given as it is the universal donor.

Hope this helps

That's me - o neg and partner o positive and bub o positive.

I have always known my blood type, and DH has always known his as he is a frequent blood donor, and I was told DS's at his birth as I had to have anti-d shot once he was born.

A's and B's are another story.
