View Full Version : Anyone else get lots of snakes?
Hi there,
This year we have had heaps of snakes come up to the house and I was just wondering if it was just us or others have had the same.
We live in South East Qld and only usually see maybe one or two a year. In the last few weeks I've seen 3 and one was in the house (as you may have previously read).
I don't know where this invasion has come from. We've had a lot of lizards in the house too.
Anyway just thought I'd see, for those of you who live in rural areas, whether you've had many snakes this year?:)

Well we arent rural but we had a tree snake under a paver in our back courtyard !
Scared the pants off us when we were lifting them !
They have said its been bad this year with the heat so they are looking at keeping cool etc & as we have migrated into their territory the find our homes & try to keep comfy !
My friends who live down the snowy mountains have been having trouble with them big time. Friends & neighbours dogs have been killed tis awful :(
Guess thats the joys of being on the land so to speak :)

Hey, don't get your hopes up, the first 18 months or so we lived here I saw one snake, that was it!
Now look at us!
DH saw a small snake in our backyard a couple of weeks ago, so between that and being stung by wasps a few weeks earlier, I'm not gardening when I'm at home by myself anymore:( .
That's the first snake we've ever had in our 21/2 years here. Maybe it's something to do with the drought.
The only thing is that this summer hasn't been out of the ordinary. We've had good rain and I wouldn't say it's been particularly hot.
Darn snakes! At least we don't get the mice!;)
Happy Lady,
Keep a chart nearby so you can learn to identify them. That way you might feel a bit better and more in control if anything should happen.
Check under the covers every night!!
Good luck, Hope you keep out of harms way,
Lx

Do you have many goanna's around???? Apparently they keep snakes away? Maybe someone just told me this to pacify me? But we see goanna's all the time, which didn't impress me - but I would prefer them to snakes I guess.....and we even had a baby one running around a while back (goanna that is) - he was actually a bit cute!!! Fingers crossed the snakes don't like the smell of me - and stay away!!!
Great tip Lilac, and yes I will make sure there is nothing lurking under the covers that's for sure!!!;)
We actually have a heap of goannas here too, we get a bit of everything. I'd also heard that horses keep them at bay too, with the constant vibration on the ground....but the guy next door has about 20 of them....so no luck there either.
I'm not worried about the types we are getting, just the usual harmless varieties but I still don't like them at the house!:o

i had a python in my mending basket in the rumpus room!!! i was ratting through it looking for some elastic and then the élastic'moved!!!scared the living daylights out of me! i screamed and then grabbed the kids and ran away!! my hero DH came and picked up the two foot snake and relocated him (i think he was terrified too!) Serves me right for leaving the mending for so long :o
Since starting this thread we've had our second snake in the house (only a small tree snake, but a snake all the same). I was at home by myself with Oliver We quickly got out of there, leaving the poor snake with my cat. I am petrified of snakes and the cat had well and truely made the snake rather mad, so I wasn't going to go near it.
The cat then came outside and I thought she must have killed it. So I creeped in, got my keys and other things and went to my drs appointment. When we got back there was no snake! We couldn't find it anywhere and I had to sleep in this house!
Anyway I found it a few days later, under the fridge.
I also talked to a local snake catcher and she says that there have been a lot of snakes in houses around here, they are not sure why, but all the babies are hatching and they are all busily looking for food. A man died in the suburb next to us after he was biten in his own house. Very scary. Anyway enough of my long story.:o

Yes we have lots of snakes...mostly baby brown snakes at the moment. We live in the northern suburbs of Brisbane. Although it doesn't help that the neighbour 2 doors up has car bodies in his back yard!!! Cane toads are the other prob also.....

Hi Happy Lady
Don't know if this helps but if you have any long grass close to your property the snakes love it.
Also if your house is cool and shaded it will be a haven for the little pests.
We live on 3 acres with alot of bush around but the area around our house is all regularly mown grass so it appears it is too hot for them to slither across thank god, and they have plenty of bush to keep cool in.
We've only lived up here a year (20 mins from Cairns) and I've only seen 2 snakes which is pretty impressive for living in the far north. Mind you I see plenty of them on the road:eek: I saw more snakes in Cairns over the last 10 years than I've seen up here.
It could have a whole lot to do with us humans building on their land ;)

Man - I am always so slow to see these interesting threads!
We have had heaps of snakes here - mostly browns. It is not surprising as there is heaps of open paddocks where we live. Just last week I walked into the lounge and a snake 'walked' out the front door - was a green tree so I just guided him back into the trees!
Anyway - just to put in two-bobs worth...
...Goanna's are definately known around here as a deterent - on our property we hardly ever (could almost say never) see snakes and there are heaps of goannas. I think it is something to do with them eating the eggs as opposed to keeping the snakes away??
Also I believe that pythons keep the browns away - I know which one I would rather have!
Nope I don't think horses keep them away although they may redirect them with the heavy steps - we have lost horses (one just before Christmas) to snake bite, and I have heard accounts of browns killing several beasts (cattle) within a very small area - they are quite teritorial
And final 'fact' - Some Indigenous friends have told me that snakes are attracted to breastmilk - during the first three months that I was bf we had four huge browns right near the house

Great, just what I needed to know.....
We've got a bit more than 7 acres, some bush, some paddock but around the house is all mowed. I have a feeling that the cat actually brought in the last one, so she's getting her mouth checked everytime she comes in.
That's weird about the goannas because we have quite a few, they scare the crap out of me on my long walk to the letter box too!
Bring on the winter I say, warm cuddly fire place, no bugs, no toads, no snakes, no insects and no bloody cicadas!!!!
Can you tell I'm not made to live here? I'd move but I hate having neighbours.
