Hi All,
My 4 yr old DD has to have her tonsills and adenoids out on thurs 2/2/06  . I was just wondering if anyone elses kids have had theirs out at a similar age and if so how did they go? did they recover quickly, was it scary waiting for them to come out of surgery? as im a little bit anxious about it at the moment. Thanks in advance for any comments :)

DD#1 had her tonsils out at age 5.
They put Emla cream on her wrist before the IV was inserted so she didn't feel it.
It was a bit nerve wracking waiting for them to take her in to surgery, but fortunately she was first on the theatre list that morning.
I was "a bad mum" and left DH to wait for her to come out, while I went to work. My manager had just got married the week before, and I was doing his job, and couldn't find anyone else to replace me. She was in hospital overnight, but didn't want/need one of us to stay with her.
She was home from school for 10 days. I had to import my mother to stay home with her while she recovered because of work. She recovered prettty quickly, but the idea of staying home so long was to avoid being exposed to bacteria etc while the wounds in the throat were still healing. We bought her some new computer games to help keep her busy, and a pile of weekly vidoes from the video library.
What I would say to you, that no one told me in advance in respect of her procedure, which I found out previously by my own tonsillectomy, is that the sore throat is one thing after surgery, but the earache is AWFUL. The pain refers to the ears from the tonsils, and eating cold things makes it worse (I wasn't keen on the icecream and jelly - neither was my daughter, tepid soups etc were better).

Hi thanks for that. I wil try to keep that in mind about the earache. 10 days off school thats alot. Tahlia starts her very first day of kindy at big school tomorrow then has her tonsills out the next day, i will have to let her teacher know i spose, and see what the surgeon says. Thanks again for that advice :)
