I have given the dude (6 1/2 months) a quarter of peeled apple to chew on. Is that okay? He really seems to like it. He has been eating mush for a few weeks now and he loves to feed himself, lots of fun for him, lots of mess for me.

Anyway, he looks as happy a a little piggy in mud gumming away at that apple - he's not too little is he?

I would be very careful. I think hes a little young for apples, so easy to choke on.

I just stuck it in a bit of muslin now so chunks can't come off...

What finger foods can I give him to eat on his own?

I'd be supervising it closely too. My son is 11 months and I still don't trust him to eat apple without swallowing it whole - unless its a very soft and smushy piece of red apple.

Steamed vegies are a good finger food :)

Cripes, I just took the apple off him now... I am sorry about your cousin's boy, that is a terrible thing to have happened :(

I am steaming some carrot for him now. If I steam it really well can I give him that as a finger food?

My son can't have apple, sends him hyper. Apprently there's a chemical in apples that is better than caffine at keeping you awake!

Sorry, didn't mean to scare you...I'm sure anything steamed well would be fine. Tho I'm not sure as my bubs hasn't started solids yet

I always found rusks to be a good finger food (not that they eat much of it, it's more for sucking and chewing on).

The apple in muslin is what I used to do & this is fine as they will not choke because they are only really getting the juice of the apple.

You could try grating apple and carrot. Have you tried bread or toast as finger food or other softer fruits??

Just make sure its all steamed & its fine this way you know when little dude takes a bite or mouthful it will turn to mush as this is much safer than raw.
I agree with Peaceangels as my bubs looooves his rusks & he actually eats them all LOL little pig that he is !!! He especially loves the vegie ones from heinz otherwise i make up my own with older bread which i smear with a little bit of vegemite cut into little soliders heh & then i bake them for an hour till they are hard. He loves em !
So as everyone has said as long as the fruit or vegies are cooked through then its fine to give him anything you think he will like ! Bubs also loves steamed baby carrots especially as you can see how grown up he feels feeding himself !
Also another option is the grated apple or carrot or even cheese as jembelina said.
Good luck now comes the time you invest in a plastic table cloth for the floor or stock up on newspapers !!!
hahahah tis so much fun :D
