My 5mth old had a tiny little bit of blood in his poo this morning. It was a bit wider than a piece of thread and maybe about 1cm long. Im a little worried.

He is breastfeed and he has 150mls of formula at night time. He has started solids and has about 1/2 a tin of babyfood.

He hasn't eaten anything red so it can't be that.

He was pushing out something while i was in the shower and he looked constipated, i then went to chane his bum and there was a nugget the size of a pea and then he decided to poo and the first lot that came out had that little bit of blood in his poo but the rest was fine.

Should i be worried? My nurse told me a few weeks ago that all breastfed babies poo's are normal except for blood.

Can anyone put my mind at ease or tell me what could be wrong. Thanks

It's never TMI when there is blood in poo!

What colour was the blood - bright red or very dark?

That is the major question, unfortunately. Fresh red is ok because it has generally come from around the anus area. If he's constipated he has probably got a little fissure (tear) from forcing it.

Dark blood is bad - go to the doctor straight away.

Then again, if you are really, really worried go to the doctor anyway.

Good luck.

it was bright red. Im hoping that it was just what you said. I might keep an eye on it and ring my nurse tomorrow.

Have a surf around the net too - the Victorian Government's Better Health Channel is very good for sensible advice.

I wonder it it could be an anal fissure. Might be different for adults vs children but when I visited a GP recently for my constipation they told me I had a slight tear therefore leading to blood in poo. Usually more common in women than men. I might be wrong just guessing so I would get it checkout out by a GP just to be sure. I wouldnt stress too much Im sure bubs will be fine.

i would go to the docs tommorow he might have a slight tear as others have said or even a hemmoroid as well, can you see anything there at all?

My DS had blood in his poo about a month ago. It was very similar to what you described. I had his poo tested and it all came back clear.

Haven't had any since thankfully.

Might be worth a trip to the GP just to ease your mind :)
