Last night was a nightmare...DD cried and fussed so much countless time during her bedtime. It started to get bad after lunch yesterday but I didn't worry so much because she has bad days sometimes. I put her to bed about 6:30-7pm as usual, she went to sleep quite easily as she didn't sleep well in the afternoon. One and a half hour later (or less) she started to stir a bit, I patted her like I always do and it usually takes only about 10mins for her to go back to sleep. This time it didn't work, and the worst thing about her being unsettled these days is that she will try to roll over and when she's on her tummy, she can never sleep. She does this a lot these days, she does it when I lie her down to sleep (it makes the matter worse as she loves to sleep on her side, so she can roll over pretty easily). She does it when I change her nappy, she just does it everytime she's on her back (even in a pram! )

Back to the story....she started to cry when she couldn't go back to sleep so I picked her up, rocked and sang to her. She calmed down but didn't sleep, I put her down and laid down next to her, cuddled her and still didn't work. I tried to swaddle her because her movements seemed to get way too jerky but she resisted and cried even more (she never liked swaddling). All of these time she'd try to roll over like she couldn't control herself. I gave her a bottle and she sucked a little bit, then pulled off and screamed again. I knew she's extremely overtried but couldn't help her to go to sleep. She didn't have wind and I'm sure it's not signs of reflux (she's a bit reflux too), all I knew was this is not her normal-self. Hubby finally stepped in (and that'd been 2-3 hours since I tried to put her to sleep, yeah he's very helpful..not  ), and said maybe I should give her panadol as she might be teething. I did and she seemed to be a bit better so we finally could get some sleep about 11:30pm. She woked up 2 hours later for her feed, went back to sleep although a bit stirring. Then at 3am, she cried again and I thought she wanted to be fed, again she sucked a little bit and fussed a lot (she usually goes right back to sleep after feed). I rocked her until she calmed down and put her back in her bed but she resisted. I decided to put her in our bed and had her sleeps next to me (I do that sometime when she's unsettled) and she slept again until about 6.50am.

This is strange, she has never been like this. Can she be teething? She has been dribbling a lot, she also has her fingers/fists/thumbs/toys constantly in her mouth and likes to suck and bite everything. She's 4 and a half months old, and I know I had my first tooth around the same time too. How long will this teething thing go on? I feel like I can't take this everytime her next tooth comes up (that's over 20 teeth, right?) And what's with the rolling over thing? I can't seem to do anything with her because of that. Sorry this is very long...I'm just tired, sleep-deprived, and basically frustrated.

I feel for you Rebecca's Mum!

The symptoms you describe do sound like teething, but I would make a quick visit to your CHN or GP to rule out anything else.

When my DS is teething I don't like to give too much panadol, and I have found that the Brauer natural teething mixture works well most of the time. You can get this from the chemist, and I'm sure there are other similar products out there.

Hope you all have a better night tonight! :)

Hi there

I can really sympathise with you. My ds is almost 4 1/2 months too and in the last few days he has been extremely grumpy and waking every 1-2 hours at night. At first i thought it was a growth spurt cos he did take a feed although he fussed a lot but then he started stirring even after a feed. Then I thought it was the rolling over thing happening cos he also likes to sleep on his side but then he rolls onto his tummy and that frustrates him and wakes him up. Sometimes he will just sleep like that but when he goes into light sleep and starts to stir he cries to be turned over to his side or back again.
It's confusing when things are happening at the same time so you can't work out which is causing the problem. I didnt have any sleep last night but i am kind of used to it cos he has never slept through but he did 11pm to 5am the other day and i was so happy but that was a one off miracle i think.
I hope things will get better for us both! My suspicion is that perhaps he is teething and i will try and some panadol before bedtime to see if it helps. My hubby cut his first tooth at 4 months so i can blame him for it all!

Sounds like teething. My son is 6 days older than your daughter and he's doing the same thing. He's very grumpy at times and talk about dribble! Also does the fingers in the mouth thing constantly. I'm off to buy some Bonjela tomorrow, maybe that will do the trick.

ozzy behaved like that for a week or so around the same age. he also changed from waking up gurgly and cute to waking up really cranky, i assume from not getting the sleep he needed. we didn't do anything, just kept a closer eye on him, and it passed after about 10 days. i don't think it was teething for him or something would have come through by now, but maybe the beginning of the teeth moving or perhaps a little ear infection or something... he's fine and back to his usual cheery self now :) good luck!
