View Full Version : Morning after pill
Just wondering what this pill actually does to the body? Has anyone had bad reactions to it? Had a scare few days back and made me think about the pill and realised i had no idea how it worked.
Thanks in advance.

I'm not totally sure how it works, but i think prevention is better than cure.
I guess i'm a little sensitive on the issue at the moment because we are TTC.
It would be interesting to know how it works though, although it's not an option for me.:)
Hi
I don't really know how it "works" either, the only thing I know is that it doesn't always "work". A friend of mine had a one night stand without protection, took the morning after pill in the morning and still got pregnant and then had an abortion.
I would also be interested to know how it is supposed to work...

Hi there, my sister has had it before, the early you take it after unprotected sex the better, however you can take it up to 72 hour after, but the early the better, it comes in a packet (that you can buy from the chemist) with two tablets in it that are take 12 hours apart and must be take at the same time. I can make you feel quite quesy and your next cycle maybe later and or heavier then normal.
But the best prevention is PROTECTION! There is so many types on contraception out there, so it a good idea to think about this, to avoid this happening again, im not trying to have a go a you at all, as these things do happen, but if you old enough to make a decision to have sex, then you old enought to be responible about it, and that includes protection.

Emergency Contraceptive Pills work no differently than regular OCs: They thicken your cervical mucus, making it hostile to sperm; they alter your uterine environment making it hostile to sperm, as well; and they thin out your endometrial lining, making it very difficult for a fertilized egg to implant.
I thought they changed the chemical composition of the lining of your uterus which stops the egg from implanting so even if the egg was fertilised it won't implant, hence the allowable delay since a fertilised egg doesn't implant immediately.
Hi everyone, i dont think there is any need to be condescending;) im sure nina knows to use contraceptions etc, but in a marriage, or marriage type relationship, little 'slip ups' happen all the time, it can be hard for some one who is ttcing to understand, but if someone has finished their family, even the possibility of another pregnancy can be very worrying, for a variety of reasons.
oh, i wasnt talking about you last few guys who actually gave her the info she was looking for, lol :)

Was just about to say the same thing Erin .....
I had a scare a few months back & that was because the condom broke & i had delayed going back on the pill for a few reasons so it wasnt because we were irresponsible which im probably sure is the same with Nina so who are we to judge. The other thing i think everyone needs to note is that she was just thinking about it after a scare which to me doesnt say she wanted to use it but had just wondered how it worked. So maybe just answering the question would have been a better option. :)
Now that being said they basically work where they make it impossible to stop the implantation of the egg so in another words you can still have a fertilised egg but your body wont allow it to attach to you uterus to allow it to continue through for pregnancy. Hopefully im making sense here. But of course like with ANY contraception there are exceptions to it working & the likes. As someone said the earlier you take it the better for your body to "react".
So anyways i took it as i said a few months back due to our scare the reason being that we had only just had bubs & i was damaged goods so to speak so the last thing i was thinking about was having another baby due to this & not being financially able to. I want to do more research into why i had so much trouble birthing with bubs before i commit myself to doing it again especially when it threatens both our lives. Made me feel a little dizzy at times & a bit unwell but some women get rather sick from it which means they have to take another dose of tablets as they have vomitted the original.
Anyways hope that helps a little. :)
Hiya Nina
I've used it once and not had any particular reaction (although I have heard some women get quite ill). Sometimes it messes with the timing of your next period, but for most women, this doesn't happen.
I don't know about other places, but where I bought mine, I had to fill out a form where they record a bunch of personal information. I think they might be trying to work out if particular people are using it often (which is not recommended) .

Hi there Nina,
(and guy's, she probably knows that prevention is the best the best protection and dosen't need that lecture from any of you!)
I took it and "I think" it delays the release of the egg for up to a week. It is not harmful to your body and is 200% better than an abortion!
And if it does make you sick you just take maxolon with it

Oh blah blah blah, preach preach preach!!!
Well I'm one of those women born without the luxury of hindsight and have used the morning after pill once, and it made me feel sick to the point that I couldn't get out of bed for fear of vomiting...it also made me loathe DH...it was his fault that he's such a hotty that I didn't have the good sense to refuse his advances because we all know...
if you('re) old enough to make a decision to have sex, then you('re) old enough to be respon(s)ible about it, and that includes protection.

I have taken it twice, both times many years ago without any side affects. Of course I would encourage anyone to use contraception, but if you have an OOpps moment, then what a blessing it is to have this avaliable.
Thanks everyone. What happened with me was same as someone mentioned, we thought the condom broke, and currently i'm off the pill, long story... but once my period arrives i'll be back on it.
I always thought that pill made the body get an early period therefore preventing anything. Not sure why i thought that, maybe something else does that.
I've got two kids and dont' want more, plus i'm not in any serious thing so it would be very bad to have a kid under those circumstances.
Hi Nina
No the story about the morning after pill bringing on a period is a bit of a myth. It doesn't often happen (from my VERY brief conversation with the pharmacist:rolleyes: ). Some ppl get concerned because they think no immediate period means it didn't work - which isn't true.

I'll go with what KM said.
My GP used to say that the morning after was simply like extra dosing of the pill. Instead of the morning after pill, she would recommend you take you normal pill in the morning, another in the afternoon (or was that 2 in the morning and another in the afternoon ?). I obviously didn't take too much notice but I do remember that the nausea is the o/dosing of the hormones in the pill. She was a member of many gyno type groups and basically said that the morning-after pill was a marketing scam....

Yep thats usually what most women do rynosmum !
You take 2 in the morning then another 2 approx 12hrs later.
Thats all the morning after pill does is overdoses you on the original contraceptive. Thats why its laughable that most women are against it when they are already using it in some form !
Oh wow, i didn't know it was pretty much the normal pill. Thanks for that info. :)
The pill i'm taking, well will be back on, is a low hormone one, even that one makes me grumpy, wonder what would happen if i did take 4 in 2 days?? Well, i hope i never have to find out.
