View Full Version : Help needed with milk feeds!
I have an 8 1/2 month old girl. My treasure will only drink breast milk from me. She refuses it from a bottle, sipper cup, cup with straw or plastic cup. I then tried her with formula (thinking she would only take breast milk direct from me). She rejected that outright. She loves water from cup, sipper cup and straw cup. She has never had a dummy (rejected that too) however will play with one (ie chew the plastic around teat).
I don't have a problem with breast feeding but was hoping to be able to leave her alone with my husband or family for more than a couple of hours at a time without worrying that she'll need feeding if I'm late.
Hi there :)
My son was like your daughter - won't take breastmilk/formula/regular milk out of a cup or bottle. It was straight from the breast or nothing!
He is 11 months now and I'm trying to introduce (veeeerrryyy slowly) regular milk as a lunchtime drink. He is doing ok, but not really drinking it yet. I don't think he likes the taste much (dont' blame him, i hate milk myself), or that fact thats its cold, as opposed to body temperature.
I just didn't go out when he needed a breastfeed - I would organise my time out of the house so it worked out that way. A few times I fed him and then left shortly afterwards and came back a few hours later. Dad loved being able to babysit on his own :)
A great distraction if you happen to be late for a feed getting home is food - if your daughter is on solids yet. Or a drink of water to give that temporary tummy full feeling.
Wish I could be more help, but I think some bubs just don't take to it as well as others. You just need to rearrange your life accordingly and one day it will be a distant memory :)
no advice but just popped in to say DITTO!!!!
my DD is heading toward 9months and I am still physically providing about 98% of her nutrition. She will take maybe a mouthful of water (from a sippy) and about 5 teeny tiny mouthfuls of food a couple of times a day - generally only from my finger /plate. She has no idea what to do with a bottle either.
So totally understand what you are going through. I just think that one day she will suddenly starting eating some quantities but it doesn't feel like it will be any time soon. She hasn't been weighed for ages but at 7.5months she was 10.5kg, so she is doing alright on bm
I guess I'll just have to persevere. I've left her before. I fed her, madly ran around doing things, back in time for her next feed then off again. She's not a big eater but she does seem to enjoy rice cereal so that's always in the nappy bag just in case.
Miss_Moe, it looks like we've both got very stubborn healthy little girls. My DD was 10.5kg at her 8 month weigh in. I've joked with my DH that I can see myself in 25 years time breast feeding her at her Wedding.:D I remember the days when I thought I'd be weaning her at about 8 - 9 months. Hmmpf. If it helps you, my DD refused vegetables until I put stewed apple with it - now she tolerates it (maybe 6 - 10 spoons). Then when she's finished I follow with diced chicken and she loves it (she's like a little bird with her mouth open looking for more). I firstly bought a 1/4 chicken (wing section) and diced that - it lasted for a couple of days. Now I cook a breast and do it that way. I've also done fish and a sausage. At least she seems to get more food that way. I met a woman at the shops with a 6.5 month old who took pleasure in telling me her DD ate all her vegetables, tomatoes, lettuce, cucumber, bread and a list of others. I wanted to hit her over the head.;)
