just letting you know for the safety of ur bub

almost 2 weeks ago while cooking dinner... i spilt about half a litre of boiling hot water onto my leg...

i had JUST taken coby into the lounge room to his dad coz he was at my ankles in the kitchen... and i mean just

as i walked back into the kitchen i pulled the rice cooker out of the microwave and it slipped and landed onto my leg...

thank goodness coby was not in the kitchen at my ankles at that time.. i would have hated that to have been the case...

after waiting 40 minutes for the ambulance i was finally taken to hospital and treated for my second degree burns

im just writing this to let u know so you can try to keep bub out of the kitchen.. it would be horrible for a baby to go through that kind of pain...

Oh you poor thing! Thank you for the warning. My DD was always around my ankles when I'm in the kitchen too! Now I take out a few plastic containers and pots and pans and put them on the floor away from the micro and oven etc for her to play with. It's a great help especially when DH isn't home. :)

Sorry to hear about your accident - it must have been awful:eek: I hope you recover quickly.

I knew a toddler who put her hands on the glass oven door and got terrible burns requiring all sorts of therapy so I'm paranoid about kitchens now :(

Sorry to hear about your burn. Ouch!! When I was two years old I tipped a cup of recently boiled water (tea) over myself. Dad had just popped his head out to tell mum, in the backyard, that her cuppa was ready. In this time I'd managed to get to the cup on a low table and grab onto it. Mum said I was on the floor in a ball of pain. I've still got a big scar on my arm but was so lucky I didn't get water on my face. It happened so quickly. So we're investing in a playpen for our 7mth old as we have a low oven and we can't block the kitchen off.

Helen i hope your leg is getting better, thanks for the warning i hate kids in the kitchen though my little one loves pulling on my legs. another idea is to put them in the cot with toys. i do this or cook when there asleep or dh home.

OH DEAR!! You poor thing!! I bet you are so glad that your DS was out just in the nick of time!! My dd has NEVER been allowed in the kitchen!! She now sits outside of the kitchen and says HOT HOT mummy HOT.. I am so glad I never allowed her to be in there as she just thinks it's normal!!

I always have DS in his highchair on the other side of the breakfast bar when I'm cooking and he's awake. He's not crawling yet though so I'm hoping that I can still manage to keep him out once he's mobile  .

I'm also very conscious of drinking hot drinks around babies and toddlers. You just never know when they're going to move in a way that will clash with your cuppa and end up burnt  . This happened to my cousin when he was little and my Aunty was told that his burn was worse because she had milk in her coffee. Apparently the milk traps the heat.

Im like Mummabear & have bubs in his highchair when i need him close while in the kitchen. Im lucky that even though he does his own style of crawling he isnt getting into too much atm & he isnt allowed either as we havent got our floors done yet but once they are a baby gate is being put up so he wont even be allowed to enter the kitchen !
Sorry to hear what happened i hope you heal quickly with no problems.
Im glad Coby is ok :D

Wow. Its scary how quickly things can happen.

I hope that your burn heals quickly, and I'm glad Coby is ok.

Thank you for the reminder. Makes me more determined than ever to block off the kitchen.

Good to hear your leg is getting better.

Thanks for the timely thread also. Sometimes one can become a little complacent with safety. That's not to say that we don't consider it or childproof our homes, just that we can't forsee the furture and accidents *do* happen. (one of the stats I read out at infant and baby first aid courses is "accidental poisoning and burns and scalds are the most common reasons for hospitalisation in children aged 1-4 years in Australia")

Almost all of those parents would have considered and childproofed their homes, but accidents still happen. ALong with the major stuff like, don't drink hot coffee over your children, keep ovens and fireplaces/heaters etc covered with an appropriate protector etc I advise little thing that may be overlooked like changing your coffee cup to a bland non patterned one, small children tend to reach for bright colours, and don't use table cloths that can be tugged on. etc.

Sorry to babble on, and I'm probably preaching to the chior, but this what I do. (the child safety thing, not the babbling ;) )

I'm glad you avoided the bad scenario and your little one is ok. I hope your burns heal soon.
