Now that I am past the first trimester stage we have started looking at nursery furniture. Have to admit it makes me all excited.

DH and I have a bit of dilemma and I am hoping that the lovely ladies on here could advise. We have a rectangle room with a lovely bay window and no WIRs or shelving. Basically an empty room.

We have (or had) decided on:

Cot (converts to toddler bed and sofa)
Bookshelf
Change Table
Chest of Drawers
Toy Chest
rocking chair

We checked it all fits in the room in different ways in case we want to switch it around. Now...for the dilemma bit...MIL...came over and saw what we were ordering and said we should not get the bookcase and get a junior robe (instead). It basically has two small kid-size hanging rails, two small shelves and two small drawers. In our house we also have two spare bedrooms for guests that have empty closets but we would like to leave these as our guest rooms as they are further away. DH and I just figured what we needed to hang could be put into one of the spare rooms since they will grow so quickly anyway and we will try and put most things in our drawers. I can even lie some things in one of the long drawers.

What do you think???? Do babies need hanging space or is a bookshelf better?

Note: we are planning on changing the room into a playroom once we have had our second bub and they have moved into their 'big' rooms. So a bookshelf would be more versatile than a junior robe, i guess. AHH!

Sorry for been so long-winded - I was so excited about the furniture and now my head is spinning.... Help Help Help!

if you h ave a WIR then you don't need a robe as well, surely. is there no hanging space in the WIR....just take a couple of shelves out and put a rod across and make some hanging space. i definitely use the hanging space for both my children since they were babies. but that's b ecause it worked better for us that way.

if you go about hanging your clothes in other rooms you'll get sick of having to go somewhere else to get clothes all the time. its better to have everything just there ready to grab.

are you putting your clothes in the book shelf or in the shelves of the WIR.?? i prefer hanging because you can just see your clothes at a glance, and just take it off the hanger. i found it harder to see all the clothes in drawers ...and the drawers always got messy.

remember to bolt the tall furniture to the walls once the babies are pulling themselves up to standing position.

Since I popped this in 'General Chat' I figured we could post what we have organised for the nursery in this thread.

I have pretty much decided on the furniture and want to get the Kidsline 'Snug as Bug' nursery range for the cot and room. It is so cute and will suit either sex - I think.

I want to paint the room a minty green too since I am getting white furniture.

DD so far only has a chest of drawers and none of her stuff hangs as we haven't got a wardrobe for her room yet (we're slack...) but will definitely be getting one very soon as some of her nice jackets and dresses could benefit from being hung up rather than folded.

To make it simple, you can very well do without a wardrobe to start with, but you will eventually need to get one, so I personally would go for this over the book shelf, as just think, how many books will a newborn have and will you want to have a bookshelf where potential trouble makers (once they're on the move) may decide the books like fun and pull them out and rip them?
