Hi there,

Well, my 1 year old seems to be obsessed with food. She is normal height and weight for her age.
She doesn't seem to know when her stomach is full. She will eat until she throws up. She was even like this before starting solids. She would keep BF until she vomited.

Now that she is older, she is throwing tantrums when the food runs out. This morning for breakfast she ate a whole piece of toast and a 210ml bottle of cows milk. Then when I started eating my breakfast she was trying to get it out of my hands, so I gave her a little bit of my toast. Well once my toast was finished she threw a tantrum that lasted for 15 minutes.

Now I know some of you will say she is having a growth spurt and needs extra food, but this has been going on for months.

DH is concerned that she has some sort of physological problem, or that maybe she is lacking in some vitamins. She eats all home-cooked meals. Vegies, chicken, meat, fish, bread, cereal, yoghurt, cheese. So, my question is - should I seek medical advice? I just think that if I take her to a doctor they will just look at me like I'm an idot and tell me that she just has a healthy appitite.

I need some help now before it gets any worse:o

I would seek medical advice. Instinct is a powerful thing.. and keep pressing until you find an answer too!
Let your doctor know that it's something you're quite concerened about so he/she doesn't just palm it off.

happybirthday for y'day :)

How much do you give her to eat on a normal day?

My DD was eating 2 pieces of toast and a banana and a 200ml cup of milk for breakfast at one stage...she doesn't have the banana now...then she would be ready for morning tea a couple of hours later.

Maybe if you gave us an idea of how much you give her you can compare it with what others bubs are eating...maybe she does just need more than what you are giving her.

Ok, on an average day she will eat:

Breakfast: bottle of milk and a piece of toast or some porridge with pureed fruit.

morning tea: small tub of yoghurt

lunch: bottle of milk and a sandwich with either avocado or cheese. Some fruit - banana/kiwi fruit/pear/apple.

mid afternoon snack: either a piece of cheese or a rusk or some more fruit.

late afternoon snack: handful of sultanas

dinner: bottle of milk and she will have whatever we're eating (eg tuna mornay, apricot chicken, lasagne etc)

Thats almost identical to what my nine month old is having!! (cept he has the toast and the cereal for breakkie!)

Honestly to me it doesnt sound like she is eating too much at all, maybe she does want more?:)

Well, that does sound like a pretty normal ammount of food :) At around 12mths DD was still not really into food, but she would eat one or two big meals a day. When she did start eating properly she would eat 2 pieces of toast or 2 weetbix & a cup of milk for breakfast. A sandwich (2 slices of bread) and some fruit for lunch, whatever we were having for dinner, and fruit/crackers & cheese/yoghurt/etc for snacks 3-4 times a day.

DS ate alot more than DD, he would eat 2 weetbix for breakfast, then have his milk while I made myself some breakfast, then while I was eating he would eat 2 piecees of toast. For lunch he would have a sandwich, piece of fruit & a few crackers or something. He also ate almost as much as I did for dinner most nights, then had milk before bed. He had 3-4 snacks a day too.

If you are really concerned, then definatly speak to a dr. If it were me and my bub tho, I would probably just try giving slightly more at each meal and see if that helps. Maybe your little one does just need more food, not everyone eats the same ammount :)

I wouldn't worry it sounds like she is eating a good amount of food  My DD has always been obsessed with food and still is at 5 years. I mean she will eat absolutly ANYTHING. I just always make sure she is eating healthy foods so it is never a problem.
DS on the other hand is obsessed but only with certin foods. At 12mths he would eat 3 wheat bix for breakfast.

One thing I lernt very early on with DD is to eat at the same time they do, that way they can't steal your food.

I dont think it would hurt to give her either a piece of toast and some cereal or 2 pieces of toast..
Breakfast is the first meal of the day and the little thing is obviously hungry.. Even with the milk just seems like its not enough..

You might find that the behavior continues throughout the day as she is still hungry and even though she is eating she's trying to "catch up" iykwim..

Perhaps filling her up properly with more breaky will mean she wont be so hungry during the day as her tummy will be satisfied from the get go and she will be saitisfied with the food you offer..

Hmmmmm - thanks for the advice.

If she was still hungry wouldn't she keep whinging until she gets fed again?? She generally has a tantrum when the food is gone, then after about 10/15 minutes of crying she is fine and happy. So I am not convinced that hunger is the problem.
Anyway, I will try feeding her a little bit extra and see how that goes.

i will give you an idea of what my DD eats at 11 months if that helps

Breaky: 2 weetbix and a piece of toast

mid morning snack - dry bikkie

morning snack - fruit or yogurt or cheese or muffin etc

lunch- sandwich or chicken or whatever DS and i eat

arvo snack - fruit or yogurt or cheese or cheese on toast, muffin etc

all this with dry bikkies and water and milk throughout the day.

When my DS was little he wanted to eat all the time because he was bored and i wasnt stimulating him enough, perhaps this is something that could be happening????? Dont stress too much though about the food intake as it seems normal to me BUT if your still concerned i would trust your instincts as someone else mentioned and go see a doctor.:hugs:

maybe she is just having too much milk and not enough food?
I know my eldest son ate like a champion when he was little and still does. he easily eats twice what i do in a day.
but i always tried to give him a decent meal before milk. because then he would fill up on milk but actually still be hungry and this would lead to him being sick. if you get me?
half the time he didnt finish his milk if he had a good feed before it.
