Who should get it: Pregnant women who will be in their second or third trimester of pregnancy between June and October, as they’re likely to suffer more severe infections. The vaccine is considered safe for pregnant women and also provides protection for newborn babies during their first vulnerable months of life.

Didn't know that while I was preggas! Here's the rest of the article...

Me too, I worked in Pharmacy for over four years and still never got one... For me personally it's not a necessity.

Agreed:yes: I think that for those with compromised immune systems, it's fine. I reckon I'm young and strong, immune system wise.

I use to work for Blockbuster Video during highschool and they had a nurse come in and give us all one because of all the customers who came in to rent movies when they were home sick with the flu.

I had one this year and caught the flu about 2 weeks after having it. I've since had a cold and have just got over another flu. My immune system has never been so compromised - I'm not sure if I would get it again.

I haven't read the whole thread but just wanted to say that I have worked at a medical receptionist from the time I was 16 up until I had DS (so almost 8 years). The first year, I had the flu shot and I have NEVER been so sick in my life. I refused to have another one since, even though each employer has tried to push me into it.

I've been told by my employers that the FluVax actually contains last seasons Flu Virus. You're being injected with the Flu Virus, therefore increasing your immunity to THAT strain. Problem is, that every year the flu strain mutates, so you're really only covered against LAST YEARS virus and whichever strain they think MIGHT appear this year.

Nope not for me and not for my kids.

I've never had a flu shot, and I've only ever had the flu once. I've had colds and coughs, but I think I've only had the geniune flu once.

I'm another one who has had colds- standard colds and bad colds- but can only remember getting the actual, full-blown flu a couple of times in my life.

I haven't had the shot before because a) I can't be bothered; b) it's not just the $20, it's the extra appointments and somehow getting to them; and c) I don't get sick that often. I think that I have a strong immune system compared to many.

DH has Type 1 Diabetes and got the flu shot recently. His immune system is already very compromised and getting the flu could make him seriously ill, so he prefers to take the shot.

I have it every year and also the pneumovax too as I'm asthmatic.

Ange&Seth, from what I understand it is last season's flu strain, but not from here, but other parts of the world (thus, the one that would be hitting us next when winter rolled around).

My husband got his jabbed in the arm in surgery (not as a patient...). And then he got a jellybean popped in his mouth. Hello! I'd like to know where my jellybean was! All I got was a dodgy bandaid.

Yep I have it every year :) So worth the $$ cos last time I got the flu I missed a whole week of work and was still feeling like cr** the whole next week at work.

A lot of people think that a minor virus eg stuffy nose, sore throat is the flu, but it's not... the real flu (even a mild case) entails a high fever, rigors and achy joints.

"I've been told by my employers that the FluVax actually contains last seasons Flu Virus. You're being injected with the Flu Virus, therefore increasing your immunity to THAT strain. >> that's only partly correct. They don't just formulate it with one strain, they use a mixture of the most common strains that have been prevelent in Europe, US etc over the past year. Obviously you need a yearly flu vax because of different formulations and mutations of the virus, but it's untrue that previous shots have no effect on future years.

That pretty much describes what happened to me. I decided to get the flu shot a few years ago because it was free through work. Ended up coming down with the exact same strain of flu that I had been vaccinated against. It took me forever to get over and it was just one cold after another, with each cold taking about a month or more to get over. It was ridiculous. I haven't had the shot since and my immune system is doing a lot better now. Never ever again!

Not a chance! Never ever, you could not pay me to have it!! Every single person I have ever known to have it has ended up really sick after it and continued to pick up everything that was going around .....so no thanks.

I have had the flu shot every year for the past 3 years and haven't had the flu. I'll keep having it for sure.

We were offered this at our work, however, I declined. I really can't recall ever getting the Flu. Colds etc - yes, but not really a bad case of the flu.

I do think that it is beneficial for those with weaker immunity & pre-existing illnesses though.
